Rice cereal - how thick?

At the recommendation of my son's GI specialist, we started him on rice cereal once a day about two weeks ago. We followed the package instructions for mixing the ratio of cereal to BM, and we have made it slightly thicker since then.

My son is using the spoon like a champ, and it seems like we could be doing a slightly thicker texture. Right now, it's still really runny - mostly liquid, like soup.

My question is how thick do you make your cereal? Do you measure out BM and cereal, and if so, what is your ratio?

Re: Rice cereal - how thick?

  • When my daughter was that age I would make it as thick as yogurt sometimes just a little thicker.

  • we use heinz and the instructions say to start off with a tbsp of rice cereal to a tbsp of water.  we've since decreased the water a tiny bit cause griffin likes his food on the thick side.
  • Right now I do

    1 TBSP rice cereal

    2 oz formula

But that's because he's just starting.

  • The gerber rice cereal has 2 sets of directions - "baby's first rice cereal" but then also a normal recipe. Double check your container. We used the first method once but it was too watery, I had no chance of getting any in via spoon :)
