Two Under 2

Breastfeeding.

I BF DS for 10 months before I dried up.  We were very lucky and didn't have any real problems but I was incredibly sore for about 6 weeks.  This time I'm having a hard time getting excited about breastfeeding.  I've heard it can be easier all around the 2nd time, but I just didn't enjoy BFing that much the first time.  I'm glad I did it, and will definitely do everything in my power to BF this baby but I just don't feel excited about it.  Anyone else have this?

Re: Breastfeeding.

  • I hate breastfeeding but I'm doing it because its better for my baby.  I'm hoping to last 5 months like I did with DS.  I find it harder this time because I also have DS to care for.

  • It was easier the second time for me. I had a lot less soreness. Also I think it's a lot easier than bottles in those early months when they eat all the time. I just don't need any extra things to do like washing bottles. I'm going to wean to sippys and milk at 11 months. Do what makes it easiest on yourself.

  • Definitely, it's been easier this time for me. With DD1, my nipples were sore and cracked for the first 8-10 weeks before it got better. This time, I felt discomfort for the first week or so.

  • oh!  i am so with you!  i bf ds1 until he was 14mon (he self-weaned about a week after i found out i was pregnant with #2), and though i know it's best, cheapest, etc, etc, i really am NOT excited to do it again.  definitely planning on it and would be heartbroken if it didn't work out, but not excited.

You are not alone! I have HATED BF both kids the first 3 mos or so.  DS has been a much better nurser but it's always rough in the beginning and you will be sore (not nearly as sore as DD though).  Since DS is a better nurser, the older he gets, the more enjoyable it's become.

  • I don't hate it, but I don't enjoy it as a magical bonding experience like some people get out of it. DD 1 was horrible to BF. I struggled the whole time. Then just recently I realized, "Holy sh!t I have almost made it to 2 months without crying about quitting BFing" so I think I can make it a little longer. It has been easier with DD 2 but it is also VERY challenging to deal with both kids at once. It seems one always needs me when the other does. I've just recently been able to cut my nursing sessions down to 20-25 minutes from 45-60 and that has helped a lot with the stress of it.

Ditto this.  I have a million other things to do and sitting down for a half hour at a time is painful, figuratively not literally.  DD#1 wants a good amount of attention too.

  • I'm looking forward to the bond but not the huge amounts of time breastfeeding takes in the beginning or the initial pain/adjustment period. Once we get past that, I think we'll be fine.

I will take all the time in the world to BF every child I have :)
(We figured it saved us over $2,000 in formula)

I definitely got "sick of it" at the end of BF my DD, but I waited and let her wean herself when we was ready (she did right at about 12 months)

I think it will be a nice excuse to "take a break" once in awhile though went #2 comes :)
