Has anyone tried another rec'ed brand, like Badger or Blue Lizard? CA Baby works well on C (we go to the beach a lot and can attest that it lasts really well in sand and water), but it is such a PITA to rub in. He has a light olive skin tone almost and he looks blue when I put the stuff on him.
Badger is cheaper, so I'm leaning towards that. But I'd really like something that rubs in better. Does that exist in non-chemical, non-hormone-wackifying form? I still use "bad" sunscreen for myself, so maybe I'm asking for too much from natural brands.
Re: EWG sunscreens *other than* CA Baby?
We used to use Blue Lizard Regular and Sensitive, but it has basically disappeared from the shelves of the few stores it was sold at, and is now extremely expensive online. We switched to Coppertone Pure and Simple and have been happy with the results. It's slightly higher on the risk scale (3 instead of 2 for the BL sensitive), but it much less expensive and very waterproof. We've had problems with the Blue Lizard Sensitive and other just topical sunscblocks washing off easily. Since we sweat a lot, waterproofing is a must.
The non-chemical sunblocks act as a barrier to the UV rays, so they won't absorb into the skin. They sit on the surface and physically block the rays.

I recently went sunscreen-crazy and bought Badger, Supergoop, and Coretex SunX wipes so I could compare.
I like Badger OK, but it is thick and takes a little while to rub in - and my pale kids look even whiter. However, it gives that "look" that it's really providing a barrier. Supergoop, which isn't rated quite as well but got good reviews from parents, was a lot more like a lotion and easier to rub in - but I've only used it once so I can't say for sure how well it protects. And the wipes are handy to keep in the diaper bag for quick application (though I still rub the stuff in a bit to make sure the coverage is even). None of them gave me the gross, coated feeling that typical sunscreens do (the Badger, being the thickest, came the closest). We haven't ended up with any burns using any of them (DH and I included), so I guess they're doing their job - though I'm not as diligent as I should be about reapplying every two hours. I haven't put them to a true test like a day at the beach yet.
we used to use CA baby too, but it is just so expensive! after doing some research i switched to Johnson's baby daily face and body. the weird thing is that it's not coming up on the EWG website now! i'm not sure why since it's where i orginally found it! anyway- i did a google search and it comes up as a "2". it is cheaper than CA baby and i like it so far.
This.
us too, but if i remember correctly the lotion is rated a 7. the stick version is a 3. i had already bought it so i'll probably use it through the summer and then try to buy some CA baby or blue lizard in the fall
Us too. This one was recommended by another bumpie that is a dermatologist on one of the birth month boards. (Along with Blue Lizard and California Baby.)
