how to elevate crib (or pack n play) mattress?

We think DD might have some reflux problems, so the doctor wants us to try and elevate her crib mattress to see if it helps.  As it is, she sleeps in her swing because she HATES to lay flat on her back, which is consistent with the reflux.  So, if you elevated yours, how did you do it?

Is there a way to elevate the bassinet (or even just the mattress) portion of the pack n play instead?  I think I'd rather her be in our room when we try this, if possible.  She has only taken a few naps in either the crib or the p&p, so both would be new to her.

really hoping that reflux is the issue and it's not just colic!!

Re: how to elevate crib (or pack n play) mattress?

  • When Spence was a baby, he slept in the bassinet part of the PNP and we elevated it with a towel rolled up and placed under the "mattress".  It worked very well.

  • We used long wooden blocks under the feet of the crib on one side.  For reflux, the elevation needs to be at 45 degrees to make it effective - which is a lot.  We used our swing b/c it could be adjusted and she slept in that for about three months. (We didn't even swing it at night...just put her in it to sleep.)  Also - they can slide down when the mattress is elevated.  So - it's a good idea to roll blanket or towel and put it beneath their feet so that they won't slide all the way down. Just make sure the blanket or towel doesn't slide.
  • We put a pillow under DD's mattress in her crib.  We still do it if she's congested or teething.  I would think you could put a pillow under the p&p mattress, too.

You can move it to whatever room you need it in, she would be elevated when she naps, goes down for the night, or is just hanging out in it.  Maybe someone on the board has one you can borrow.  :)

  • Our crib mattress flexed when we tried to elevate it, so it didn't do a whole lot of good. Instead we had some of those plastic bed frame elevators (you know, for a regular bed frame) lying around from college. We used two of them, and just elevated one end of the entire crib. I imagine something like this would work with the pack n play, too. Until we got a special pillow to keep DD on an incline, we wound up doing what you're doing now - just using her swing (and we still do this from time to time, when we can't get her to go down in the crib. Good luck!!

I was going to suggest this.  This is the best $40 we ever spent.  DD is in it right now because of her ear infections.  She slept in it in our room and then in her room before we transitioned to the crib.  It goes with her to Grandma's house.  Its awesome.  It has a strap to hook her in so she can't shimmy out and its reclined.  I highly recommend it.  I hope the reflux is fleeting!
