Rx ladies, please come in...

During my visit with my PCP, today, I asked about Rx migraine medications that would be safe(r) to take while BF'ing. Even while not BF'ing, I'm hesitant to take Rx medication (which was Treximet); however, I had a really intense (can't move off the bed) type migraine, about a month ago, and, in hindsight, it would've been nice to have something to take (even if I had to pump and dump 1x). In any case, he gave me a few samples of Relpax to keep on hand, until I wean and can go back to Treximet. Of course, now I don't even see it listed, specifically, on the kellymom.com chart. (Is it just too new a triptan? If so, would it be in the L3 risk, category?)

Anyway, I just wanted to get your thoughts on this medication. Specifically, if I have to break down and take it, how long should I go before BF'ing (or how long should I P&D)? Or, IYO, should I request that he write a script for another Rx, all together? I just want to be proactive. TIA!

  • I can't help with Relpax and pumping, but like pp said, there's lots you can do to help that doesn't involve drugs.  She mentioned some good ones, my others are ice/heat (some migraines heat works better and vice versa), rub between your thumb and first finger in the webbing (pressure point), migrastick is aromatherapy you can get at most health food stores (peppermint and rosemary oils), salty foods, caffeine even if it's just one coke, and for some reason McDonald's cheeseburgers.  Yes, I know, laugh, but a fountain coke and cheeseburger from McDonald's only is a sure cure for some of my less severe headaches.  Also keeping my feet warm seems to help.  I really hope you don't have to resort the the Rx, all of the triptans knock me out and I have to sleep them off for a few hours, though I feel a million times better when I wake up.

  • Thanks for your responses, ladies! I forgot to mention that I've dealt with [fairly] severe migraines for the last 15 years, and I've only had to resort to Rx a handful of times. However, the ones that I can't get rid of on my own, sans Rx, are like WHOA! (and if/when they get to that point, usually nothing else will get rid of them, other than laying in a dark room, all.friggin.day). I should've also mentioned that I got a few referrals for acupuncturists, and I plan to try that avenue, as well. The Rx is on hand as last resort. Wink
