Parenting after 35

NPR - Changes to your period after age 40??

Hi Ladies:

I cannot believe I just found this board after lurking mostly and occasionally posting on the other parenting board!  I feel so old over there...and the drama!  Ha!  Anyway, I have possibly a weird question.  Did your period change after you hit 40, well, for those of you over 40?  I just turned 41 and my last few monthly visits have been very painful, especially the first two or three days.  When I was on the pill, I used to not really get cramps at all.  After I went off the pill, had my two children (3 and 5), I decided not to go back on the pill and everything has been fine until recently.  Yes, I had cramps, but nothing like I have now.  I am a runner and sometimes I get a sharp pain, not really a cramp, but more like a stabby feeling, and I have to actually stop running and breathe in and out for a minute.  It's not just when I'm running, either.  It's pretty much off and on all through about the first 3 days.  Oh and advil doesn't touch the pain.  At all.

Anyone else experience something similar?

Thanks,

Dana

  • Before my DD my periods used to be like 10 days...4 days spotting, 2 days bleeding, another 4 days spotting. Going through infertility I had numerous procedures, one, i think the hysteroscopy really cleaned things up. I think my periods have changed but for the better. I get no cramping now & they are very light for the most part last 4 days. Sorry I know this isn't what you wanted to hear. Hope it gets better.

  • Hi Dana & welcome!  Sorry your first post here is about painful periods.  I cannot say about the change due to age (I am also 41) because I am taking birth control pills (Loestrin24Fe) and cannot say if any changes are due to that.  In the last 3 months, since starting it, I've had an adjustment to the different pill and my periods are now shorter and lighter but I have monster cramps the first day.

I'd say speak to your GYN and see if there is anything going on. At the very least maybe you can get something for the pain.

  • Hi, I'm just getting ready to turn 38 and my periods have changed in the last few months.  They are suddenly irregular and I can feel very slight cramps when I haven't for many, many years now.  My Dr.  said not to worry and that it's normal for them to start changing around now.  If the pain really bothers you or you are concerned I would definitely see you Dr.

  • I had fibroids before and during my pregnancy with Margaux (they have since magically disappeared, I kid you not) and they made cramps more painful for me.  Maybe you've developed some?  They aren't uncommon.  I'm 43 now.

    Oh, and welcome!  :)

  • You probably don't want to hear my story either. I'll be 41 in July but before I got pregnant, my cycles were around 35 days long, with spotting 2 days before my period, then 4-5 days bleeding, then spotting another day or two. I had mild cramps on day 2 but nothing Aleve couldn't get rid off. I also had sore breasts before and during my period.

After having Adrian, I have no PMS symptoms at all! No cramps, no spotting, shorter cycles (28-30 days), no tender breasts. I've noticed I have to use Super size tampons b/c the regular ones are too thin now, my lady parts must be more stretched out after the baby.

In April I got a corticosteroid injection to treat severe congestion due to a sinus infection. I never had that shot in my life and since then, I had a 42-day cycle and THREE full-length periods in May (every other week!). This is completely abnormal for me so I suspect the steroid shot messed up my cycle. I'm going to see my ob/gyn next week to see what she says.

I've always been regular and I was only on the pill for 3 years or so. I don't plan on getting back on it anymore. We'd like another baby so I'm not on any BC now.

Sorry, I don't know why you have more pain than before but I think that's not normal. You should check with your doctor to make sure it's not fibroids or something like that. Good luck and keep us posted!

  • I am no help here since I had an IUD inserted after my last pregnancy.

I agree with PP: you need to see a specialist to investigate your pain.

  • Thanks for all of your responses.  Will definitely be checking with my doctor next month.

Again, I am so glad I found this board!
