XP: NE1 travel away from LO for a week or more?

I have to take a trip the week after next for 7 days, and I'm really nervous about leaving DS for so long.  If you've taken a long trip away from your LO, what coping mechanisms did you use to help LO with your absence?  (DH will be home with him.)

I just played up how much fun they would have with DH or the ILs (DH and I have gone away on trips without the kids).  I emphasize all the cool things they can do together.  It's also a coping mechanism for ME because instead of wallowing in self-pity, I think about all the fun things they are doing and how they are building such a great relationship with the ILs or DH.

  • I travel a lot for work with my spouse (we work together) and sometimes we can take the kids but often they have to stay at home.  In addition we also always take one big long trip (5-7 days) and one shorter one (3-4 days) just the two of us.  My kids are pretty used to this and their Abuelita's home is a second home for them.

With my older son the main thing is just preparation.  We tell him ahead of time starting a few weeks in advance that we are going to: Puerto Rico or New Orleans or where ever we are going.  We talk about how much fun he will have at my moms and some of the special things we have planned for him.  While we are gone he can call us if he needs us and we call once in the morning and once in the evening.

Honestly this last trip (we were gone Fri-Mon) he didn't even say goodbye he was just so excited to be at Abuelita's.  I think I was more sad than he was.

  • I was away by myself for a skating trip for nearly a week in March and honestly, I don't think my kids cared. My in-laws were in town helping and DH was home much of the time. They had so much fun doing different things with them, that I don't think they missed me much at all. Oops!
