Baby Names

Not trying to stir the pot.. just confused.

I'm sorry if the causes issues, and I'm not a troll (promise) but I don't get what is so "brave" about naming your child Apollo.

In fact I LOVE Apollo John and it's going on our list of boys names if we ever succeed in our treatments and end up with a boy. (We do middle names after family names and John is my brother in law)

Is it just because it has something to do with mythology?

Please fill me in. :)

  • It's just not popular or "in" and therefore possibly subject to teasing. It's a really strong name too. That's what I think at least.

  • Yeah Im with you on this. I read that people would love to use Magnolia or Poppy but just arent brave enough...well call me crazy, but I have a Poppy and a possible Magnolia if LO#3 ever shows up. I think Apollo is awesome...John is a little lame for my taste, but I do think it "calms down" Apollo.

  • I love the name Apollo.  I think people say it is brave because it is such a big name for a tiny person and they may not think it fits.  It is a great name and the baby will grow into it.

  • I love that name and name combo!!! :) Maybe it's considered brave because you're going against the norm... all of the Braydens and Jaydens and Aidens, etc. lol :) IMO it isn't brave, it's awesome.

I'm not crazy about John as a first name, definitely too old fashioned and "boring" for me. It does go very well with Apollo though. We also try to give our kids very unique first names and "classic" or "tame" middle names that are in the family. I guess that way they have a more normal name if they decide they dislike their unique first name.

We also decided next time around we wont tell people our names prior. My parents HATED DD1's name prior to birth. They like it now though.

  • I think Apollo is great! It's unique, but still traditional.

I can't stand the top 5 boys names. Really... all the "den's" boring.

  • Yeah we kept LO#3's gender and name options a secret for a reason. DD1 was going to be Lily Sunshine but I got talked out of (which im sure she will appreciate) She is now Emma Lily, DD2 is Summer Poppy and my family to this day hates Poppy. If we have another girl she will be Lula Magnolia and they can kiss it if they dont like it. I always regretted not naming DD1 Lily Sunshine so Im glad I couldnt get talked out of my favorites this time. I dont think Apollo is even close to weird or brave.....but thats coming from someone with kids named after flowersWink

  • It's just a fairly unique name that a lot of people have listed on different posts asking for "guilty pleasure" names, or names people would use if they were "braver." That's all. Smile
  • Interesting: this is the second child named "Apollo" I've heard of recently.

As for your question: I mean... it's the name of a god frequently associated with perfection. It's a pretty intense name. Like you, I don't know what bravery has to do with it, but it's definitely a "statement piece" of a name to say the least, and I think that's what people are getting at when they say "brave."

I don't love it, but I'd rather a kid be named Apollo than Jayden or Jaxon or Braxton Hicks or whatever twee ridiculous cutesy names are so popular these days. I myself have a pretty unusual name lined up for my (future) daughter, so if you like Apollo, that's what's important!

  • Hmm I like your names, but they remind me of Jamie Oliver. Doesn't he have a Poppy Honey or something?

I say go for it! If your family dislikes the magnolia they can shove it!

Yeah he does...Honey is weird to me though. Yeah I think Magnolia is a fun and pretty name and as badly as I want a boy, I really want to use Lula Magnolia....maybe Ill have to get a girl dog next. haha.

Oooh, I have a Poppy too! :) Super popular in the UK, but you are the only other person I have ever "met" who used it. :)

I dont understand the brave comments either. But then, I could never ever name my kid Sarah, soooooo..... maybe its the same thing.

Im right there with you on this too. I dont like the trendy made up names by any means, but I cringe when I think of such "normal" names. I say all of this even though I have an Emma....in my defense, I was 19 and had no clue it was popular. oops.

  • I think it's brave because the majority of people are going to hate it. This board happens to be a haven for people that love atypical names and etymology. I like the name Apollo, but if I actually used it on my kid, the reality is that my entire family, all of my friends and most people we meet would probably roll their eyes at it. For the rest of my kid's life.

So despite the fact that I like the name, People's reactions would scare me out of using it. Therefore, I think anyone who does use it is making a pretty bold move.

MNs are a different story. Who cars about those anyway? Personally, I think Felix Danger's parents had the right idea... go nuts if you want.

I think it's more this than anything. My daughter is Temperance and a few girls on here have told me I was brave to use that name. It's super uncommon (hasn't been in the too 1000 for the SSA list ever) and the only connections people typically have for it are prohibition and a book series turned television series with Temperance as the main character. I got some looks from ultrasound techs and family was 50/50 on it, but she's completely a Temperance and I adore her name.

If you dont mind me asking, whats her name? :)

I have a Kairi and a Jayden (both girls). My parents hated Kairi's name prior and jayden they never said anything about since there was no choice in the matter.
