2nd Trimester

ANOTHER (#4) ultrasound??

SO, I've heard that they are safe, but I cant help but wonder, how many is too many? I've already had 3 ultrasounds, cuz there were some issues early on, but at the last ultrasound, apparently the ultrasound tech wasn't patient enough with my wiggling bambino and the doctor said she needs clearer picts of the heart. Now, Im 21 weeks and at my last appt the other week the doc said the heartbeat sounded "perfect." SO, Would you get another one? ESP since things seem to be okay?? How many have you had or have had in the past and did it upset anything? Thanks for listenin! Confused
soooooo excited!!!

Re: ANOTHER (#4) ultrasound??

  • I had three with my last pregnancy. All at different terms because of complications I have had in the past. I am pretty sure these don't hurt the baby, but I can understand your worry. Maybe try talking to your dr. I get nervous when it comes to baby's and them not seeing what they need to see. It would make me worry.

  • I have to have one every month, which will probably increase to every 2 weeks or week as I get closer to my due date.
  • I had 9 with my daughter because I was high risk. I am high risk again, have had 2 so far, but anticipate several more, including a possible follow up to get clearer pictures of the spine from the anatomy scan. The way I see it, I'd rather have extra u/s and make sure everything is okay than turn down an u/s my dr feels is necessary and not find something serious.

  • My OB does an u/s at every single visit... It's how she checks on baby (instead of Doppler) and likes to see the fluid at every visit. I'm low risk.. Its just what she does. Ultrasounds are safe.. Consider yourself lucky! And like ppl said, better to get all measurements.

  • there are some serious concerns with ultrasounds, but as long as you're not doing them electively, i wouldn't worry. i agree with PP that, for the most part, the benefits of discovering potentially serious defects ahead of time outweigh the possible negative affects. but it is important to know as much as possible and not get any more than your doctor thinks are really necessary.

if you, or anyone, want to read more, i found this website to be really informative. basically, we just don't know enough about how they affect children long term, and the machines used now are a lot stronger than the ones used in the 70s & early 80s, but no research has been done to determine what that means.

I had plenty of u/s with my daughter last time around. I believe my Dr did 2 or 3 in the first trimester, then I had NT scan, during the second trimester I had 2 in addition to the anatomy scan and after I was diagnosed with gestational diabeties I started going every 2 weeks during my third trimester.

I'd rather have more u/s and make sure that my baby is fine, then not have them at all, especially since they are not hurtful to the baby.

This time around I had 3 during my first trimester and an NT scan and so far one during my second trimester. I am hoping for another one next week to possibly see the sex of the baby before the anatomy scan.

  • If the doctor says you need it, I would get it.  Ultrasounds are just sound waves, there's no radiation or anything dangerous to hurt the baby!

  • I have already had 6. Because of my history early on, and my doctor hasn't been able to find the hb with doppler yet.  So, I keep geting them.  I am having my anatomy scan in 2 weeks.  It will be early, but he said if we can't see everything we will do another one a few weeks later.  I asked my doctor were multiple us okay and he said yes.  He said it is much worse for the baby for me to be stressed all the time.

This. I dont understand why people are so afraid of ultrasounds. My midwife does one at every single appointment, and the other midwives and OB's in the clinic do also. I know they wouldn't do this if it meant any threat to the health of my baby.

  • I have had four already. I'll be needing one every 3-4 weeks from here on out, plus an extra one with a new doctor next Monday. So far, I'll end up having either 9 or 10 ultrasounds before LO is born, maybe more if his condition gets worse. If they were dangerous, high risk women wouldn't be recommended to have them so much.

If I were you, I'd at least get the next one just to make absolute sure everything was okay.

I have to have one every month.

I have one every month as well with the private insurance I have here in Spain...I hadn't thought about it being bad for the baby!  I am also going through the public system here and have had about one other ultrasound there too already (the NT scan)....I think I've had 6 total already because I also had to have an extra one to check my amniotic fluid level which my OB thought looked low.

If they're harmful my baby's already entering dangerous territory!

  • Every week or more often now due to high risk complications.  From what I understand, there is no proof that u/s are unsafe.  Especially in my case, the benefit/need far outweighs the risks.
