Baby is coughing

Hi Everyone -

I haven't introduced myself yet, but I've been lurking here.  My baby was born 3/22/2011 and is ours through adoption.  He's such a sweetie and we couldn't be happier with him!  He is the perfect baby for us :)

Anyway - the point of my post and paranoid new mama ramblings.  I have pneumonia.  I was diagnosed yesterday.  It started with a tickle in the back of my throat on Friday night and progressed pretty fast.  (Four days to full fledged pneumonia in my right lung).  Anyway, I noticed today he was coughing a little more than normal, but dry.  My husband just told me he had a juicy coughing fit a few minutes ago.  Obviously we will be calling the doctor first thing tomorrow, but has anyone had a baby with a cold yet?  I'm worried he's going to get really sick.  I don't think he'll get pneumonia, which by itself isn't contagious, but whatever cold it was that I started this whole mess with.  He also had his first round of vaccines a week ago, so I'm worried his poor little immune system is working overtime :(

Does anyone have advice on what we should look for overnight?  Like when would you call it an emergency?  Right now I'm being overly paranoid... but he's our first and this would be his first illness.

TIA

Re: Baby is coughing

  • I didn't see this until this morning. I hope you had a good night. It never hurts to call or go in, better safe than sorry.

  • DS had a cold about a month ago.  It gave me piece of mind to bring him in.  He ended up having the starts of an ear infection.

  • DH just got back from the pedi with him. They are testing him for whooping cough just in case and put him on antibiotics. No fever right now but they said to call if anything changes or if he developes a fever. I guess whooping cough has been particularly bad in our area.
