Northern California Babies

starting solids

We are going to start feeding solids to the twins sometime after the 6 month mark. I am totally blanking on how this goes.

Rice cereal first, then veggies, then fruits right? And how many days in between?

Also at this age, does the feeding replace a bottle feeding? (No right?) and how many times a day to start with?

Lots of questions sorry. I am not looking forward to this because I remember it being a total pain, that times two..

Re: starting solids

  • SHUT UP. Seriously. Can't believe it.

My boys never tolerated rice cereal. It jacked them up. We did avocado first and moved on from there. I never did all veggies first or all fruits, I mixed it up. We did solids first and then bottle for one feeding a day and then added in more as they showed more hunger.

Ack. Your boys are growing way too fast.

  • We did cereal for one feeding per day. We then started avocado, veggies, and then fruit. We waited about 7 days before we added something new. We added the second feeding when they acted like they needed it. I don't think food replaces a feeding. I made that mistake with Parker, and it killed my supply.

Solids are a PITA. Can't imagine feeding 2 babies! However, they are so cute I imagine they could make anything enjoyable :)

  • We started with rice cereal for a week, then tried oatmeal for a week.  He never really liked the cereal by itself so we started mixing it with some veggies or fruit.  After this, we mixed it up with fruits and veggies.  We always gave a bottle first and then solids about 30-60 minutes after.  That way he wasn't missing a formula feeding, which the pedi said was really important.  Our pedi told us that a few days in between new foods was sufficient, but I know many others say to wait longer.  He also told us that once he really started eating that we could be "adventurous" with foods he tried, obviously staying away from highly allergic foods though.

  • I've always been told that you should BF/FF first and then offer solids about 60 minutes after the feeding. At this age the majority of the baby's nutrition should be coming from the BM/formula and the solids are just to get them started on the concept of eating.

We started with rice cereal with G and he loved it. After that we introduced sweet potatoes then waited about 3-4 days before trying the next food. I alternated between fruits and veggies.

Ditto all of this!  How can they be old enough for solids already?!

We did oatmeal instead of rice cereal with Peyton, Riley didn't like either.  I think you are supposed to wait 3 days between trying something new, but we didn't follow that either.

  • We started with Avocado. We did a little bit of purees once in a while and now Winter gets oatmeal for breakfast on occassion but we never did rice cereal.

We mostly did Baby Led, which worked really well for us.

I can talk to you more about it in person if you want.

  • We started O on avocado first, right around the 5.5 month mark. We may be in the minority here, because we stuck primarily to veggies first, then added oatmeal, eggs and then fruit. We also gave him other meats (chicken, etc.) before fruit even. We never waited more than a day or two between foods. He was eating every single "allergenic" food before one, and has no allergies (but DH and I have no food allergies, so we weren't concerned). O has been eating what we eat for months now. It's so much easier to feed him when I don't have to prepare a separate meal altogether.

(O also had two teeth at five months, and by eight months he had eight teeth, so feeding him purees was not a big issue for us)

  • OMG, they're almost 6 months already?!  I saw this post and was like what!!!

It's cereal and then veggies/fruits and it's introduce every 3-4 days I believe.

  • We did rice cereal, veggies then fruit. We waited 4-5 days before introducing anything new.

ETA: He gets solids about 30-60min after BF/Bottle feeding

    GL!

And ditto - how can they be 6mo already!

  • Ditto pp.

Start 20 min after BF. Preferably sometime in the morning to monitor for possible food reactions.

BF should NOT be replaced by solids yet. This is 1) just practice; 2) caloric count in a small jar of food = 60kcal. caloric count in 1oz of BM ~ 23kcal. You're gonna have to do a LOT of solids to match what your BM gives them.

Start w/ 1 feeding a day and see how that goes. If they're more interested in foods, begin a second a few weeks later.

What you start with is entirely up to you. We skipped rice cereal w/ S2, because he's already not regular, and it made G constipated something fierce and I didn't want a repeat of pissed off baby. So we skipped cereal altogether and went for sweet potato. I've heard some people even offering proteins first (but I think that's if you're observing more baby-led weaning approaches).

Have fun! Hope you've got some bibs handy :)
