Found her hands

DD has officially found her hands and most importantly, how to suck on them. So now as per her usual she drops her pacifier and in go the hands. Now, I was a thumb sucker so I know how difficult it is to break the habit so I don't want her to start but if I replace her hands with her pacifier won't she become crazy attached to her pacifier? Also, isnt this the beginning of self soothing? So is it bad to discourage? I know sucking on fingers/hands isn't the end if the world but I'd like to avoid it if possible. So what to do now? Any ideas/experience?

Re: Found her hands

  • I consider it self-soothing and I'm looking forward to DD getting the hang of it!

  • DS found his hands in the womb. He started trying to suck on them before we left the hospital. Unfortunately for him he can't suck due to his cleft lip and palate so he just simulates sucking on them.

  • Not sure whether you're breastfeeding, but I've had a few LC's say that if you are, they prefer the baby naturally find his/her own hand as opposed to giving a pacifier.

  • My son hates pacis and loves his hands and arms. I'm nervous about having a thumbsucker too but all the books, plus the parenting consultant at my moms group seem to think it is fine,so I don't worry about it. A few times when he has ben really worked up, I helped him get hs hands in there and he was much happier.

My friend is a speech therapist and has seen lots of kids come in with problems so I tried to give LO a pacifier to avoid that. However, she refuses to take a pacifier and prefers her arm or hands. I guess we'll just have to watch it. I breastfeed, so I didn't want to give her a pacifier anyway.

  • mine found her hands the other day, and now it's non-stop sucking/licking them anytime she can.  she still struggles to get the hand to the mouth sometimes, it's cute to watch :) i was never a thumb/finger sucker so i'm hoping she grows out of this.

  • My LO is breastfed, attached to her pacifier, and I'm not worried about it.  You can take away a pacifier when the time is right but you can't take away a thumb.  My DD1 used a pacifier, it took a little work and some discipline, but she gave up the pacifier just fine. She was right around 18 months when we stopped all together.  The little girl next door is a huge thumb sucker and I cringe every time I see her playing in the grass and dirt and then the next second putting her thumb in her mouth. She probably has a fabulous immune system though! :)

Maybe hands and fingers can be a backup soother for your LO when the paci is unavailable?

My LO started sucking her thumb in the womb.  The dr. suggested I replace the habit with a pacifier b/c that was easier to break.  And yes, the pacifier is still difficult to break. My 2 yr old is only allowed to have it at night and eventually when the newness of the baby settles in we'll take it away completely.  Hopefully, we can break DD2 of the habit at the same time.

  • Peanut has found her hand too and once she gets it in her mouth she goes to town on it. She's not a huge fan of her soother. I can put it in her mouth and she calms down (usually) but then she spits it out and sticks her hand in her mouth lol. I'm not really sure how to deal with having a thumb sucker lol.

My exSIL took my niece's soother away at Christmas by telling her if she put it in her stocking then Santa could take it to a baby who really needed it. My niece put it in there and didn't look back lol! I thought that was a really cute way to deal with something that could have been a difficult thing.

  • I am torn and thought the paci habit would be easier to break... but LO doesn't like them and loves her hand/thumb. As long as she has something that soothes her, I am going to go with the flow for now at least!
