February 2011 Moms

say goodbye to breastfeeding.

A little bit of back story: DS was born and immediately taken to the NICU (pneumothorax) and I wasn't allowed to hold him for the first 24 hours. So we never got that initial skin to skin and nursing that I planned on. So his breastfeeding story started with the pump. For 4 weeks we met with several different lactation consultants, used the SNS system, nipple shields, syringe feeds, you name it.. anything to get him that precious breastmilk when he couldn't latch on himself. At 4 weeks we got him to latch! Only to find out I had a severe case of yeast in my left breast. Back to the pump to try to get that healed. (nursing was too painful) Fast forward to 12 weeks: the yeast was finally healed and we started nursing again full force, no more pump! Here we are at almost 15 weeks and its still just too painful. DS has a bad latch still so I'm constantly in pain. He's very fussy and the more I think about it, I think something in my diet is causing him pain. DH is in TX for basic training so I'm flying solo here.. I'm just too stressed and I feel myself slipping out of control. So yesterday I made the decision to make the transition to formula. It wasn't an easy decision, but I think its the right one. He's already had 2 bottles of formula and LOVES it! I'm in the process of weaning right now, and who knows how long that will take, but I think our end result is going to be a happy one.

ETA: as a side note, I'm making a blog... any ideas for names?

  • Do what you need to do for you!  It's great you've been able to give him breastmilk this long!  Good luck weaning

  • I can relate a lot to your story - I had major complications after a c-section (internal bleeding requiring a second surgery, post-partum pre-eclempsia, etc.etc.), resulting in me not being able to try to breatfeed until DS was a week old (not allowed due to antibiotics). As would be expected, he much preferred his bottle, and my milk never really came in. We tried the SNS for 5-6 weeks (what a PITA!) nipple shields, etc., as well as every supplement known to man to increase my milk including Reglan and Domperidone. Milk supply never got above 7oz/day pumped, and DS would never really latch (also met with LLL and LC's many times). So, this week I decided that now I am just going to pump and give him that, no more heroics trying to force him to breastfeed. I think we will all be happier for the decision!

  • I am so sorry you have had such a hard time.  DD and I are currently going through a low supply issue, so I am working on considering the same.  We shall see.  You have to do whats best for you and your little one, good job mama.  Oh and a blog name... How about TorinsTales after your LO?
  • as long as you both are happy and healthy then it doesn't matter how he eats just that he eats.

I need to start weening as well. This is not going to be fun since I still produce a lot.

  • that sounds like a great plan. Nursing still hurts me and I made the decision to just pump. Every once in awhile I'll nurse Lucas, but it depends on how my nips are feeling.

  • Blog name ideas: Raising Torin, The Tale of Two Torins (you know, one Torin is the 'good' Torin and the other is the 'bad' Torin, the one that won't sleep, is super fussy, always poops when he wears a white skirt, etc), or Torin's Torah- The 'bible' of your baby.

As for weaning... Well, it sounds like you gave it your best shot, chica. You did everything humanly possible to get him as much bewb joos as you could, and you did great. Do what's best for you both, though. If this makes you less stressed, it'll make him less stressed too. Babies feed off of our emotions.

  • Thanks girls. It wasn't the easiest decision, but I feel really good about it!

  • Do what you need to! Mom feelin out o f control is never good for baby (or mom!). Also, my blog is titled "Life, Love, and Baby Laughter" and since I never update it, because I suck like that, or post it here you can totally steal it ;).
