Is your LO scared of public potties?

I'll admit that I am scared of SOME public potties, myself, but I will still use one in a pinch.  DD is a scaredy cat.  She makes up things to fear, and it makes me nuts!  DD has rocked the potty training.  3 accidents in 2 months...all at school!  We just have to get the night training nailed, and we are done.  But, she just suddenly decided that she can't use a public toilet.  She is super freaked out by auto flush toilets, and also does not want to do her biz in any toilet outside of our house or her school.

So, we have a 13 hour drive coming up this weekend.  I went to BRU in search of help and found a plastic Dora fold up portable potty seat that sits on a big toilet.  Small enough to go in a diaper bag, but something to make her secure about not falling into the bowl (and me secure knowing she isn't sitting on a nasty surface).  We plan to put her in a Pull Up to prevent accidents in the car seat, since we already know she has issues with the tons of public toilets we are about to be using.  She WILL NOT pee in a Pull Up (except for night time).

So, if your child has issues with a public potty, do you think the portable seat will help overcome the fears?  I just don't know what to expect on our trip.  Any hints to make this easier?  I HATE the thought of regressing to daytime Pull Ups.  It has been WEEKS since we have done that.  I will still put her undies over them,  which will make her ask for the potty, but she still may not go when she sees the public john.  Help me!

  • E didn't like those fold up seats that fold into fours because they didn't seem sturdy enough.  I bought the Potette Plus seats at BRU and they worked great for us.  It would also work well on your drive in case of a sudden need to stop and you can set it up in the back of your vehicle or on the roadside if really necessary.  There are handles that are wide enough for her to hold onto, so she won't have to touch the big potty, it has a nice sturdy seat, and it folds up and fits in your bag just fine.  I really liked it and so did Ethan.

  • DS won't use the potty at school unless absolutely necessary.  He is completely trained, goes on his own for #1 and #2, re-dresses, etc.  He just won't go in public.  He'll go at people's houses.  He is afraid of the flushing sound.  Even if I cover the sensor, he won't go.  In April, we did a 7 hr trip and he refused the public potty.  I bought a portable potty (one that turns into a stool) for the ride back.  He just holds it!  We'll see if he's over this for our next trip in July, but if not, I plan to have him go in the car in the portable potty.  Chances are he'll be bothered by that and choose the regular public toilet.  I like your idea about a seat cover that folds up. Anyway, just wanted to say at almost 5 yrs old he is still fearful of public potties.

I have never seen this!  Thanks, Miranda!  This may be something we buy, too.

ETA:  Whoops, might be a bit small for a 5 yr old.  Will keep in mind for baby #2!  Looks like a good solution for Brenna, though!

  • I have two of those seats if either of you would like to borrow and try them out!!  We aren't using them now so won't need them unless we take a driving trip :)

  • I'd get the one suggested by PP's.  My DS1 has always hated public toilets and still dos!  DH does too so I guess he came by it honest,  we don't go when we are out unless they are nice facilities.

  • Mia was SO scared of the auto-flush toilets.  We were at a public bathroom one time and she screamed bloody murder, when we came out, the lady waiting in line stopped me and said, "Is everything alright?" I am sure she thought I beat my kid in the bathroom.  It helped Mia when I started holding my hand over the "eye" so it wouldn't flush when she was sitting on it, she seemed to be okay as long as I did that.  Good luck on your trip!  I know how it is having a fraidy cat! ;)
