Flying - gear question

LO and I are flying to visit our families in about a week.  My question is about the car seat.  LO will be on my lap for the flight, and I'll check the car seat.   My question is about the base - do I take that/check it attached to the seat or what?

The other option, since I'll be with the parents (I'll see both sets) for over 2w is to just buy a new base to keep with them.

Baby Boy Born 3.15.11. 8lb 9oz, 21.75in. 6 month stats: 20lb 11oz (92%tile), 30.12in.(100%tile - who knew it went over 99th? Which means 100% of other 6 month olds are shorter than mine!)

Re: Flying - gear question

  • Most, if not all, infant car seats can be used without a base. I would just read up on how to do that and leave the base at home.

  • I would totally do that for a weekend trip, but this one is 16 days, and I think it'll be easier all around to have the base.   (It's likely that we'll just decide to buy a new one. they aren't that $$).

  • You don't HAVE to have the base, you can still buckle the seats in the "old school" way!
  • We just got back from LO's first flight to Phoenix and back.  We checked his carseat and just left the base attached to the bottom of it while checked.  It wasn't a big deal and they didn't make us separate them.  Also, the carseat did not count as a piece of luggage.  GL!

  • When we picked up Malachi in KY, we brought the carseat with the base attached to it.  It was fine both ways.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • We had my IL's buy a base since we'll be going there more than that one time.  If it was a one time trip, i'd bring it.

  • We checked the base for free with our suitcases, then gate checked the stroller and carseat. All worked out fine. We also wrote our name and phone number on the bottom of the base in permanent marker just in case. Happy traveling!
