Diaper question

How soon after your baby wakes up do you change his diaper??

I usually wait a little bit (like half an hour) with Cooper because he often poops after he wakes up and he doesn't wake up super wet.   But when Steve gets up with him, I will come down 2 hours later and he hasn't changed him.  And I have gently suggested that he should change him sooner than that even if he hasn't pooped and his diaper isn't exploding with pee.  And over time I've gotten a little more direct about "suggesting" that he change the damn diaper sometime relatively soon after he gets up.  Well today, I got up and Cooper's diaper was SOOOOO wet and I said "Steve, you have to change his diapers" and he again made some excuse about how he had "just checked" and since it wasn't whatever he deemed to be bad enough to change, he hadn't.  He got all pissed that I was "reminding" him again to change the damn diapers.  And I finally said "Look, I shouldn't have to remind you ever day you get up with him that he needs his diapers changed - he's been in those diapers all night and he needs dry diapers pretty soon after he wakes up" and he said "fine, I'll just change him as soon as he gets up" like that was some sort of ridiculous response and I said "perfect" and he stormed off.

ARGH.   Sorry I needed to vent.

Re: Diaper question

  • We change her immediately when she wakes up in the morning or even from a nap. After she's been in a diaper all night the diaper is soaked, there is no way I'd leave her in that.  And, even after a nap she's usually got a full diaper.

I'd be ticked if DH didn't change her right away after getting up, that can't be comfortable for them!

My DH is like this with any "task".  If I ask him to do it, he does it "his way" or not at all.  In his mind, he probably thinks, either I do it when he gets up or when every I think about it later.  And asking him to do it 30 or 45 minutes after he wakes up is too much for him to be responsible for. Stick out tongue

  • Yeah, after waking is THE time to change their diaper regardless of anything. Weekday mornings I might wait :30 just because we have to pick out his clothes etc and it's just easier to do it all at once. And maybe once or twice I've put it back on if it was completely dry (after nap).

  • I change A immediately, every time.

  • I change it as soon as he gets up, unless it is dry then I put it back on and wait for him to poo and then change it.  DS is usually really wet in the morning so there is no question he needs to be changed.  DH was watching DS the other day and I went to change his diaper and it was soaked ( like overnight wet) and I said something to DH he said, oh, I forgot to change him.  Opps, he said he was sorry and has done better.

I agree you should not have to remind your DH and Cooper should be changed shortly after waking.

  • I change immediately after every sleep period.  My H just usually does what I do when it comes to caring for her, so we haven't had an issue.  However, the diaper needs to be changed right when they get up in the morning - if that is what it takes to get him to do then I say "eat" the extra diaper if he poops soon after.

  •  I change LO as very shortly after she wakes up in the morning; she is usually pretty wet and needs changed. I have also noticed that she usually soaks another diaper within about an hour of waking up and needs most of changed again. As for naps, she usually wakes up because she is pooping so I change her right away.

This has been pretty much my life, so my sympathies.

We've had this fight basically from the moment DH took over morning duties.  One strategy if you are willing to try it... we just started doing some part-time EC (which I thought was totally hippy, but turns out it really works and is really easy).  The morning is the easiest time.  I get DS up and take him straight to the potty, turn on some water and read a book, and we get a good pee and sometimes a poop right away.  I then hand him to DH now sans-diaper and go back to bed.  He has no chance to leave him a wet/dirty diaper  :)

    This!!

  • We always change E right away when she wakes up.  In the morning, her diaper is always really wet.  After naps, the diaper definitely needs changing 9 times out of 10 - it's very rare that she's dry when she wakes up from any sleep.
