XP: Questions for Dairy Free Moms

To try to make a long story short: I am going off dairy because DD may have a dairy (casein) intolerance. I am good on reading labels for any signs of milk, dairy, whey, casein, casein derivatives, etc.

I have heard that there are certain kinds of cheese that adults with casein intolerance can handle because the casein proteins in them are different-- specifically goat cheese, manchego and even hard parmesan. I was curious if any of you have found that your LO is ok if you eat those cheeses. I really don't want to risk it unless I hear from some dairy-free moms that they haven't had problems.

Also, I heard that there's some kind of natural supplement you can take as a just-in-case for trace amounts of dairy that may sneak in. I can't remember what it's called and I can't seem to find it on google. Can anyone help me with the name and where to find it? Does it really work?

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • I've never heard of any supplement to take, but DD's allergist did say that she should stay away from ALL cheese, no matter what kind of milk it's made from. At this young age, they really don't want to challenge her too much, espeically because her numbers came back as severe.

  • I am gluten free and casein free as an adult and actually cannot handle any dairy whatsoever, I get digestive disturbances & skin rash if any casein or dairy enters my system.

I don't know what the supplement is called, I don't take care, have never heard of one, but I will google it and see if I find anything!

  • i am not sure about any supplement.

we did try goats milk kefir and ds did fine.  however, when i tried goat cheese, he broke out in hives.  the problem (i think) was that the goat cheese had cow milk cultures, but the package was not labeled as such.  but, i haven't given him any goat milk products since.  we are completely dairy free.

  • since it's an intolerance and not an allergy and he's getting it through your milk- you might be ok with goats' milk/cheese products and hard cheese (like parmesan).  I would pull eveything completely to start with and err on the side of caution.  You can always add back in with very small amounts.

  • Thanks for the feedback. I am talking about an intolerance-not an allergy. DD #1 had absolutely terrible colic that we figured out came from being unable to digest casein. She outgrew it around 8 months. I am going off dairy as a precaution for DD#2 (she shouldn't arrive for a few more weeks!). Would be nice to keep a little cheese in my life, but I guess I'll just try some goat cheese when DD#2 is a few months old as a test for introducing dairy.  Thanks again.
