2nd Trimester

fun summer plans? kinda venting...

I posted this in the 3rd trimester but it can really go across the board....

This is probably terrible but I'm wondering what kind of fun I'll be able to have this summer....I doubt I'll be able to kayak which I started doing during the summer...no more rollercoasters (obviously), no more amusement parks...all of the obvious things, but no drinking, no sushi, no casino,  no hiking (we're big into hiking)....I know that our fun will be different and I just need to say goodbye to some of those things? But what are you planning on doing this summer?  People at work are like "you're going to want to stay home and rest and sleep and stay in the AC!" or "you'll have to get ready for the baby!" I just have always been a "doing things" kinda person and now I have to be a resting kinda person?

I know I can go to the beach but then some people are saying it'll be too hot to go there too....

Any words of advice for a first time mom who is 37 and probably was getting used to life without a family but now am soooo blessed!

  • I'm a FTM so I really don't know what my pregnant summer will entail, but I'm looking forward to lounging in the pool, sitting in front a fan reading/prepping for our daughter, going for walks early in the morning (when it's still cool), and enjoying movie theaters. I know it's not "doing stuff" like you're used to, but it's only for a couple months then you'll start doing more stuff once your LO is here.

I totally understand where you are coming from. With DS I was due July 31st so I was huge in summer and bored! This time will be a bit better, but for people with an active lifestyle pregnancy can be very limiting.

I know it's hard, but remember you are doing it all for a great cause. It will only be one summer and believe me you will be back to doing all those things next summer if you want to be.  Last summer was my summer between pregnancies and I did a ton of fun stuff knowing that I might be pregnant again this summer.

I will try to indulge in a few special things since I couldn't do my normal fun summer stuff. DH and I booked a cabin at a resort with a spa in the mountains so we can get massages instead of wine tasting. I can still walk in the woods on easy trails, even if I can't hike with a pack and we'll spend a good amount of time at the lake just lounging. It doesn't get terribly hot here though, so we can still enjoy the outdoors in the summertime.

It's hard to get used to a big life change when you've been independent and active for a long time, but try to remember that it's the beginning of a lot of changes that are happy changes!

Um, I plan on doing stuff. We're going to Pipestem State Park in a couple weeks for a few days, and while I know I can't do my favorite trail, there's a 3mi-ish one that's pretty level that runs along the river, under the trees. I will do it. Or one like it not down in the valley. We're also going to the beach at the end of July during my 33rd week, and while I'm going to enjoy laying out sunning, I'm going in the ocean to flop around a little. And I will build a ridiculously huge sandcastle like I do every year (you know the ones you spend like 5 hours on, then just sit and watch the tide destroy your defenses? yeah, that kind...). I've got a huge garden (15'x50'), and the only machine we use is the tiller before planting. Everything else we do with a rake or hoe. I was out there yesterday and today for several hours in our awesomely muggy 90 degree weather doting over my precious radishes and peas. In the middle of the day, without shade. I'm fine. We've also gone out and played tennis a couple times. You know what? If people expect me to keep working my sh*tty job up until I go into labor, they can just suck it trying to tell me what I will feel up to doing. I have yet to find anything as physically draining as running around on your feet for 8.5 hours. I'm pregnant, not disabled.

  • Having spent the past two summers crying over BFN after BFN, failed IUI and IVF attempts, and recovering from a m/c, this summer may be a little boring, but I couldn't be more thrilled!  (Sorry - I don't mean to come off snarky, but its honestly how I feel.)

TTC Child #1 Sept '08, Dx: Unexplained, DOR 2 IUI's = BFN, m/c, IVF 1 = 0 embies to put back, IVF 2 = BFN, IVF 3 = cancelled, IVF 4 = BFP with 1 embie. Our son came into our life on 9/28/11. We are in love! Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

I agree with this. I am an nurse and am on my feet at least 85% of the day and working makes me more tired than anything. However, I am still working out, going for walks, swimming, climbing playground equipment with my son and I feel fine. I worked out throughout my entire last pregnancy too and felt just fine. Sure you can't do roller coasters and things that could endanger the baby, but you dont have to stay in the house and lay around all summer. So what if you are a little warmer than you normally would be?

  • I don't know where you are from, but down south we have a thing we call "floating" (don't know if everyone call it that) It is where we get some inner-tubes and sit in them and float down the river for a few hours. You take along a cooler in it's own 'tube (some even have radios built in!) to hold drinks and snacks. Anytime you want to stop, you pull over to a sand bank and throw a Frisbee, or just swim or whatever. Usually there are designated "play spots" too, where people over the years have always stopped and somethings are set up there permanently (rope swing, cliff dive, mud slide, deep pools, grills, etc.). And there are usually 2 different options on how far you float (or canoe, or kayak). I am doing that this weekend!

Ummm, another thought I had while reading your post was, what about bowling? It is inside and you could explain about having to wear your own shoes so as not to slip. Or maybe put-put-golf. Or an arcade. Or a waterpark and float down the "lazy river" and do the small slides?  I am from a rural area so I don't know what is available in your area, but these seem like semi-active kinda things that should be fine to do. (If not, someone please post and tell her, FTM here too!)

Oh! But don't try kick ball bare foot in wet grass! I fell down yesterday and almost landed on LO b/c I just had to get up ONE TIME and kick. The kicking was easy. It was the running that messed me up. And I swear the fall was in super slow motion, lol.

    Good Luck Honey!

I fully intend on kayaking unless my OB says otherwise. The only issue I can see with this one is having to pee every 30 seconds. The beach? If you get too warm, splash around in the water. That's why people go to the beach. I also plan to pretty much live at the pool. You can go on certain rides at an amusement park (not to mention funnel cake). I was told that water rides are generally okay as well as small rides like the Teacups. My OB has also already told me that bike rides are fine as long as I don't overdo myself and make sure I stay hydrated, so I'll be doing that a lot, too.

I'm only 20, so I've never stepped foot in a casino ad therefore don't really know much about this, but why wouldn't you be able to go there? With the nation wide smoking ban, I don't see how it'd be harmful (other than to your wallet hahaha).

  • Why couldn't you hike or kayak?  You're pregnant, not disabled.  If you were active before pregnancy, you can easily remain active throughout.  Also, why on earth couldn't you go to the beach?  We're leaving for a beach vacation in two weeks and I also fully intend to spend as much time as possible at the pool this summer.  Life doesn't need to stop just because you are pregnant.

I agree. Why can't you kayak or hike?  I went hiking 4 days before my due date with my DD.  It was a 6 mile moderate hike.  Just make sure you bring lots of water, snacks, and be sure to take breaks when you need.  As far as the beach, I see no problem with going to the beach.  You probably shouldn't surf but sunbathing and swimming is perfectly fine.

  • Life isn't over when you get pregnant.

There are some limitations on what you can do - but honestly, you can still enjoy your Summer.  Just stay hydrated and don't overdo it.  No problem!

As for saying goodbye to some things, well, perhaps think of this as a prep for motherhood.  When you become a mom, your lifestyle changes.  But again, life doesn't end.  It takes a bit more planning and different prioritizing, but you can still enjoy your life!  I was 36 as a first time mom and was definitely used to my freedom - and it was an adjustment.  But I wouldn't have it any other way.

  • I agree with some pp. Why can't you go kayaking and hiking?  I would take it easy and not do any eskimo rolls or hike 60k.  I plan on taking a trip back east when I'm 20 wks and plan on going to July 1st and 4th celebrations, sit by the lake, go for a canoe, take some walks.  We also have planned a bunch of camping trips for this summer.

just have fun but listen to your body.

  • Thanks everyone!!  The only problem with doing all of these things is....having to go to the bathroom every 15 min! LOL!
