I can't believe this but I started to feel achy at work. Now I am home alone with DS, DH is working late and I just feel horrible. I think I need to take something in case I have a fever but of course we have about 8 bottes of Ibuprofen...uhhh
Acetaminophen is safe. It's pretty much the only pain reliever a doctor will give you. Even if you break your finger (this happened to me a few weeks ago)
Tylenol is acetaminophen and is safe. Ibutoprofen not so much, DH brought two pills me the other week, glad i took them both so much i know the difference

Tylenol is safe, yes. And also extra strength as well. I actually was given tylenol-3 for headaches by my high risk ob. If your doc and you discuss it, then whatever they give you is acceptable. Dont sweat it hun, Im on a whole schlew of meds that are questionable for pregnancy, but its my health and doc said you have to stay healthy and comfy for baby to be healthy and comfy.

Overall, ibuprofen is safer than acetaminophen, but for unknown reasons doctors still say not to take anything but tylenol.
Can I ask where you heard this from? Ibuprofen does more damage to your liver than any other pain reliever. Tylenol is the safest pain reliever as it does the least amount of damage to your organs.

Ibuprofen is not safe during pregnancy because it can cause heart problems in the fetus. I think it's more of an issue in 3rd tri as it related to a specific valve in the fetal heart, but they still say it's a no-no during pregnancy.
Ibuprofen is also way harder on your stomach. But it works faster and lasts longer.

I'm curious about your medical background or rational for stating ibuprofen is safer than acetaminophen. Most doctors recommend acetaminophon over ibuprofen, pregnant or not, because it is safer for almost anyone. Even patients with cirrhosis (ie. liver failure) are safer to take tylenol than ibuprofen. Ibuprofen can cause kidney failure, GI bleeds, more likely to cause allergic reactions, etc. FWIW I am a doctor.
Ibuprofen does not cause liver damage....it can damage the kidneys in large amounts over a long period of time (I work in nephrology).
Tylenol is generally safer for people with high blood pressure, kidney damage, or diabetics that are at risk for kidney damage, as well as people on blood thinners, or have history of GI bleeds, ulcers, etc.
Tylenol is only safe at the recommended dosages, and overdosing on it can cause liver failure and death. No drug is absolutely safe ever, but Tylenol is safer during pregnancy than the alternatives.

That unknown reason would be that ibuprofen is a blood thinner, and if you were to have a placental abruption, miscarry or go into labor, you would be at a serious risk of severe hemmorrhage. Not to mention the defect risk a previous poster mentioned.

I am a PA who works in L&D, and this is absoultely untrue. We only give our patients Tylenol, not ibuprofen.
