How pregnancy is preparing you for parenthood

Every now and then I realize that pregnancy is helping to develop habits that will help me being a parent, what a perfect design. What habits did the incubation period form for you that helped (2nd+ time moms) or do you anticipate will be helpful (FTM)?

Mine:

1. Lack of sleep for obvious reasons.

2. Keeping food and snacks in the house at all times. I used to never have anything to eat but now have a stocked supply at home and work.

3. Grossness. I don't think anything could come out of LO that is worse than what I have experienced so far (obscene amounts of discharge, urine leakage, putrid gas, etc.) and am yet to experience (mucus plug anyone?).

ETA: 4. Unsolicited advice. By the time she is here I will be so used to unsolicited advice that it won't even stay in my head long enough to make a dent. I will have perfected the understanding nod of the head and "thank you for your advice" while replaying scenes from my favorite movies in my head.

  • Huh, I never thought about the grossness factor, because yes, there is a lot of gross stuff that comes out of them!!

  • I agree with everything you've said.

Also, being prepared on the go - I never leave the house without water, tums and a snack.  As time goes on, I may have to add clean undies to that list.  LOL.

And improvising - it's getting tougher to bend over for stuff, and I'm getting pretty good at picking stuff up off the floor with my toes.  I'm also getting better at maneuvering around my ever-growing belly.

  • learning how to let go.  there are so many things with pregnancy that you just can't control.  same goes with being a parent.

  • I've really started to love silence and take advantage of it whenever I can. I notice myself driving in the car with no radio on...or bumping without the TV in the background. DH thinks I've just gone mad, but I think it is a way of preparing myself for how wonderful silence can be. I also think I am way more "chill" now then before.

And the obvious one is that I really don't miss drinking and smoking as much as I thought I would. I already had planned on quitting when we were going to start TTC, so that isn't as big of a deal and I know I will drink again after LO, but I don't see any "black outs" in my future!

  • Oh geeze, the mucus plug?! You had to bring that one up?? Stick out tongue I never had to see/deal with that until my 3rd son. I swear that thing was coming out for like 2 weeks off and on. Finally it gave way about 3 days before I had my son. It was probably the worst of things to see.

I've became defensive when I became a parent. I do whatever it takes to protect my kids from some of the stuff I wgrew up around. They are my world so that was a major change I noticed. I'm still really easy going, but I don't hold back half as much as I used to.

  • People already named most of mine, but I'll add:

    Multiple stops on car trips.

I think about this all the time. I've also noticed how this is preparing DH to take care of an impatient, cranky, dependent and sometimes crying person.

I was just saying this the other day, lol.

     Hmm...where do I start:

    1. I am over my issues with seeing puke- so I will be able to help baby nugget when he vomits one day without blinking an eye. 20+ weeks of constant vomiting makes puke seem like, eh whatever!

    2. My inability to eat and very limited diet from m/s- prepared me for when the kid refuses to eat anything or only if they don't touch and the crust is cut off.

    3. Then there was the constipation from hell that almost resulted in dis-impaction, lol.  So, weird poo issues, which I am sure the kid will have at some point unless he takes after DH- for his sake I hope he does.

    4. The latest- urine leakage because nugget likes to hang out on my bladder. My us today confirmed that is where his head is..so I think this is preparing me for leaky diapers.
