Carseat crying...

My little one is 9 weeks old and she HATES the carseat! Nothing we have tried helps the screaming and crying.  She hates the paci.  We breast feed exclusively, so we make sure she is fed, changed and happy... Like clockwork as soon as we get her in the seat and in the car... the waterworks start.

Any suggestions from other Mommy's that have dealt with this?

Re: Carseat crying...

  • DD hates her carseat too. The only fix I have is when there are two adults in the car, one of us sits with her and we keep the paci in her mouth until she falls asleep. That's pretty much the only time she takes a paci, but she can't keep it in her own mouth.

  • I don't have experience with this because Luke has always loved his carseat, but a few weeks ago I added his carseat toys that hang off the handle, and now he's even happier in the seat.  He looks at his little toys, swats at them, smiles and laughs.  Have you tried hanging them from the handle as something to distract your baby from the actual carseat?

  • I have this problem too when its just me and LO in the car. I think she just gets lonely back there, so when DH is with us I sit in the back with her and keep her occupied.

  • We recently adjusted the straps so my LO is not quite so crammed in there, and that seems to have helped reduce the amount of crying while we're strapping her in.
  • LO loves to look at herself in the mirror that we have on the headrest. She seems to like when we play music too, she passes out as soon as we start driving!

  • It is funny, really.  With DS, I sat in the back, or would arch myself to keep the paci in. It was torture to hear him scream.

With DD (my second LO), there is no room in the back seat and my back hurts too much to arch it around, so I don't do anything anymore!  It is amazing how quickly I can drown it out now.  She always settles herself down, even if it takes 5 mins or so!

  • We have the same problem.  It doesn't seem to be the seat, but the being in the car that makes her cry.  It's been torture since birth for me since I have to drive to town and back (15 min each way) twice a day taking SS to/from school.  We've tried different types of music, singing to her, static and a few other things I can't think of right now.  Thus far nothing has worked everytime except being able to put the pacifier back in which is impossible when you're driving.  I sewed a soothie pacifier to a little stuffed animal the other day and she is starting to play with it and the toy attached to her carseat now, so here's hoping it's just something they grow out of as things around them get more interesting.  Another thing we tried this weekend when we went on a 3 hr drive was nature sounds playing really loudly - frogs and ocean seemed to do the trick for at least an hr each.
  • Do you use a sleep sheep or anything similar at home? You could try purchasing a travel one to attach to the carseat.

Sorry I can't be too much help, LO loves her carseat. I have noticed that she hates it whenever Grandma is around though.... Grandma likes to call me a "mean mom" because I keep her in her seat when we are driving and LO feeds off of her and starts crying to get out. Needless to say, Grandma will NOT be driving anywhere with my daughter.

  • DS is fine with his carseat but he HATES car rides. We've found if we flip the sun shade so that his face is in the shade at all times it helps. We found the sun hitting him when we changed directions made him super angry. It helps but he still doesn't love the car.

  • My LO doesn't love the car either.  I think she just gets bored sitting in one place for too long.  She usually starts crying about 10 minutes into the ride and nothing will make her stop, even if I'm back there trying to entertain her.  It sucks and I don't know what to do!

    same here!

we also have the mirror on the backseat so the driver can see the carseat- he loves staring at that too.
