Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Sunscreen for baby?

I was just reading the "Know it all" thread below and I hadn't heard of not using sunscreen for baby. Will you use sunscreen on your baby this summer? Or is it better to let them be exposed to sun?

We are going to San Diego next week and I assumed we'd be putting sunscreen on Morgan but I'm interested in other opinions....

Re: Sunscreen for baby?

  • Idk what the post below said, but you can start using at 6 months according to our pedi.  I believe sunblock is better than sunscreen.  But you need to really read the ingredients.

  • We spent this weekend at our cabin and applied sunblock religiously and also kept him in his little "cabana" in the shade.

  • I think its absolutely crazy not to use sun protection on your baby. But then again I live in AZ where its a requirement no matter what time of year it is. We typically use sunBLOCK (Zinc Oxide instead of the chemical blockers in sunSCREEN) but if I had only sunscreen available I'd use it over leaving her protectionless!

  • We just got back from the beach at Nags Head, NC, where it was upper 80's min, and we used banana boat baby sunscreen on DS all week and he did fine. Didn't know it was an issue, thought having a sunburned baby was bad, guess I'm a bad parent.

  • Please put sunblock on your baby.

  • I am confused. I didn't know there was a difference. But I google'd for some info and got...

    Thank you so much, Beanie!

I think just going outdoors for even a few minutes exposes them to the sun, which they need exposure to but not in massive amounts of time.  On that note, I didn't read the other post either (I will now), but I've never heard of not putting any sunscreen/sunblock on your baby.  Actually, I have read to use it especially if it's your baby's first summer.

E is very fair skinned right now -- lighter toned than me and my H -- so this whole weekend, I applied sunscreen a ton of times and bought a hat and kept her in the shade because I was paranoid that she would get sunburnt.  Last summer, I got a little sunburnt during my babymoon in PR, on a cloudy day, just because I didn't apply sunscreen so I'm not taking any chances with the LO.

I would just like to say that I don't think it's ever better to let them be exposed to sun.  I was posting with the option of using sunBLOCK (check the ingredients) AFTER 6 months, and prior to 6 months, keeping her out of the sun.

We use sun screen (or block? I'm honestly not sure?). Banana Boat Kids, 50 spf, waterproof, hypoallergenic, .. We still try to keep her in the shade though and always give a sippy cup of cold water. I've actually never heard of them being unable to sweat through sun screen.

Yeah, we've been using the Pure & Free sunblock on the days we've had sun (which has not been a whole lot), or when we've been outside for extended periods of time.

Morgan is also very fair skinned and I can't imagine not using something to protect her (whether that be clothing, etc). But, after reading the post below I thought maybe I was missing something as far as what to use/what not to use, etc.

That is what we use for Lily (got it from that thread) and it worked wonderfully when we were in the south. She is the palest of pale, so I am a little OCD about sunscreen with her. Also be sure to have little Morgan wear a hat when she is exposed to the sun as well!

When we spent the night in the ER with Juliana there was a little boy who got brought in. He had been brought in by his parents because he had played outside during lunch time at daycare and during that small amount of time had gotten a sun burn on his face. Throughout the day/night the boy was in so much pain that they ended up bringing him in because his face started to blister and ooze. The mother had put sunblock/sunscreen (not sure which one she used) on him in the morning but it never got reapplied throughout the day. The little boy screamed everytime the doctor tried to clean his face. Sorry, but it's all still stuck in my head and I apply sunblock on Juliana like crazy now because I don't want that to happen to her.

    Please use sunblock.
