Swaddling question

We swaddle DD at night. I've avoided swaddling her during the day so far because we thought the swaddle helped her figure out that it was bedtime at night and has helped her sleep throught the night.

She naps great in the Rock N Play or swing (1-3 hours) but I'd like to get her on a regular nap schedule and have her get used to napping in her crib. She naps OK in her crib but no more than 30-40 minutes without the swaddle. Do you swaddle for naps? And does your daycare provider swaddle for naps as well? This is the other thing I'm wondering about since she'll be napping in a crib once she goes to daycare in another month. Also, will this make weaning her off the swaddle harder?

Re: Swaddling question

  • We swaddled the babies in miracle blankets for both naps and bedtime until 4.5 months. We established a bedtime routine that included bottle, swaddle, book, bed at about 3 weeks, and for naps, we just swaddled, so I don't think it confused them. When they went to daycare at 4 months, our DCP used the miracle blanket with them, but she's an in-home provider. I've heard some centers won't swaddle, so you probaby want to check with your DCP.

As for stopping swadding, we tried weaning them off around 3 months, but they slept terribly, even if we left just one arm out. When we tried again at 4.5 months, we went cold turkey one weekend, and they did great right from the first night and actually slept much better. By that point, they were fighting the swaddle after a few hours of sleep every night. We transitioned them to sleep sacks. I think they were finally ready then b/c they had enough arm control to stop wacking themselves awake by that point.

    Good luck!

  • We didn't swaddle for naps, but then started and it improved his naps (although he's still not in the crib). We transitioned from the swaddle this past weekend after doing about half his swaddles one-armed for a week or two. He has actually slept like a champ and only woke up once last night (after three weeks of 2+ wakeups a night). We are using a sleep sack, though, so his night-time routine is diaper change, putting on the sleep sack, rocking and nursing.
