This is really bothering me (warning-SAD!!)

There was a little girl in the room next to us when we were in the ER last night.  She was probably 4 or 5 and we overheard the doctors talking to her parents several times.  Each time, the parents were overwrought with worry.  And, each time, the doctors were extrememly reassuring that their daughter was ok.

About 2 hours after we got there, the little girl coded.  They worked on her for 1.5 hours, all the while her parents and grandparents were outside our room pacing, praying, and sitting with their heads in their hands.  We heard the doctors tell the grandfather that she was gone,  heard his anguished cries ("What!?!?  That's it?  Just like that!?!?"), and saw the mother faint as they told her.  We heard the father wailing in the room next to us and punching the wall that we shared with the room as he cried over his daughter's body.

It made me so thankful that my son was going to be ok.  But, it's also made me so, so sad.  I have no idea who the people were, but I can't shake this bad feeling.  It seems almost irrational that it's affected me so much.

I don't even know why I'm typing this out.  I guess I just needed to get it off my chest.  I felt so helpless watching everything happen around us.

That would shake me up, too.

  • Oh my God, that just breaks my heart. I cannot imagine the pain and grief that those poor parents were going through. No parent should ever outlive their child. Heartbreaking.

That is awful.  I was a secretary in the ER in college. A kid my age was killed in a car accident.  I heard the screams/cries from his parents as they were told.  It was horrible.  I had to excuse myself.

  • That is so utterly heartbreaking/devastating.  Another sad story, my nephew was in the ICU for several days after a go cart accident.  There was a little girl in one of the rooms that was hooked up to all kinds of machines (I assume she was in a coma) and I overheard the nurses talking about how none of her family ever came to visit her.  That broke my heart.

  • That is so, so sad.  And I don't think it's irrational at all for you to be so shaken by hearing/witnessing such an emotional, devastating scene.  It would haunt me for a long time.

  • I think that it's perfectly normal for you to be so shaken.

When DS was in the ICU at the children's hospital, it was horseshoe shaped.  While in his room we could see straight across to the other rooms.  There was a little boy that drowned in a pool, I still remember the day they took him off life support.  Heartbreaking.

  • I'm glad I didn't read this last night before bed. However, now I will think about it all day. If I had been there, I would have been a total complete heap on the floor.
  • I'd be shaken up, too - how awful!
  • I cannot imagine.

I too would be shaken by this. So sad :(

  • OMG iam in tears right now because this brings me back to the night when my little brother died. This brings back so many raw emotions, and bad memories. I cannot even imagine what the little girls parents are going through, and what my parents are going through as well.
