Anyone here experience Palpitations?

So probably 3 times this week I've had some "fluttering" in my chest and neck...I'm a nurse and I am sure they are benign PVC's. Are these common in pregnancy? Anyone else experience these?

  • Yes, I get them sometimes too. I remember them with DD also!

  • I had them towards the end of first tri. And only here and there during second tri. I just have to sit down and try to take deep breaths, and that normally does the trick.

  • Yes, that is actually one of the first signs I was pregnant ha ha. My PCP actually sent me to a cardiologist becuase they were so bad. Since I got past 8 weeks or so they have luckily slowed down. Now I only get them every few days (vs every 5 minutes).

  • I had PVCs before, but very infrequently. Around 14 weeks they got out of control (every third beat for over 5 hours, then less frequently for hours after that) and ended up in the hospital. The cardiologist and OB both think it was aggravated by pregnancy. Neither seems too concerned, but I'm on Lopressor to help control it. The doctors said that the extra strain on the heart from the extra blood flow, etc., can make it act up. If it lasts longer than an hour skipping every 3-10 beats I was told to go to the doctor (if they are open) or the ER immediately. It hasn't really been an issue since I've been on the medicine.

  • I get this.

  • I have them too.  My midwife sent me to a cardiologist who said it's common and probably totally fine, and they gave me a 2D echo just to be sure.

  • I do and I'm going to mention them to my OB tomorrow. I have minor valve regurgitation on 3 of my heart valves so I get palpitations anyways, so he'll probably send me for an echo.
  • Yep! When I told my doc about them she told me to lay off the caffeine so I did but it didn't help.  I don't experience it as much as I did in the first trimester but occasionally.  It's just a weird side effect I guess.
  • They are fairly common in pregnancy due to the increased blood volume and demand on the heart.  As PP mentioned, as long as they seem to only happen occasionally and you are asymptomatic while having them/afterwards they are generally nothing to worry about.  If they become more regular or if you experience dizziness, shortness of breath, hotheadedness, etc, you should call your doctor immediately or go the ER.

Strangely I had them A LOT with my first pregnancy but have only felt them once so far with this one, and they started really early on last time.

  • I was told that when this happens, you are supposed to sit down, take a deep breath, and bear down (like when you are pushing out baby, or having a BM).  Create that same type of pressure.  Hold for 5 seconds, and then see if they have stopped.  You may need to try this a few times, but it should stop the palpatations.

  • I had these early in my pregnancy (around week 8)

  • Yup I have had it a couple times.  My doc said could be among the many "normal" things that come along with pregnancy.  I think I had them a few times before being pregnant too.
  • I started having them a couple weeks ago. I talked to my mom about it and she said she had that happen when she started taking Iron pills a few years ago, which reminded me that I did just start taking new prenatal vitamins. So I stopped taking them for a couple days and sure enough, the palpitations stopped. I've been taking my vitamins now every other day instead of every day and I haven't had any problems, but I'm still going to ask my doctor about it next week.
