VBAC

Any GD Mamas who have had a successful VBAC?

I just got diagnosed & I'm wondering how this may effect my chances of trying for a VBAC.  My Dr. originally told me that I could for a week past my due date but I am now hearing that I can't go past my due date because of the GD diagnosis.  I am starting to get worried that I'll be hit with more restrictions as my due date approachs.  Does anyone have any insight or advice?  TY.

  • I did and I know there was at least one other woman on here that did as well.  I was diet-controlled, so not treated any different than a non-GD patient except that I had weekly NSTs starting around 35w.  I did have a growth u/s, but it was optional and I was curious since I never had one with DS.  I had DD at 40w1d with no talk of induction or c/s at my 40w appointment.  Let me know if you have any questions, I did a lot of research after my dx!

  • I'm in the same boat as you.  I can't go past my due date, so if LO doesn't come before then, I'll have an RCS.

I was very anti-RCS until my diagnosis.  I'm still going to try for a vbac but I understand that there are reasons I can't go past my due date, one of them being premature aging of the placenta.  I've come to terms with the possibility of an RCS.

I start my weekly NSTs this week and I had a growth ultrasound last week.  I'll have another u/s around 36 or 37 weeks.

  • Are you on insulin?  Not sure about Metformin since I wasn't on meds, but I know that insulin can affect the placenta.  I understand being careful and not going past edd in that case, but have noticed that some docs seem to treat GD patients the same even if they are diet-controlled with no current research to back that up.  I'm sure if I stayed w. my old practice that would have been the case.  I honestly feel like it's just lazy, just like some docs make sweeping generalizations about vbacs even though current recommendations have changed, etc.

I really like this site for info: https://www.plus-size-pregnancy.org/gd/gd_index.html

I VBAC'ed with GD in December.  My doctor was fabulous and really didn't treat me any different than he would his other VBAC's.  I was allowed to go to 42 weeks (I had my son at 40w3d).  As a defensive measure, I worked out religiously to keep my blood sugars down and my weight gain in the range that my doctor and I wanted to increase my VBAC chances.  I was able to keep my blood sugar under control with diet and exercise as well.
