Giving water to newborns.

I am a believer that my breastfed baby will get what she needs on super hot days from nursing extra. I also drink a ton of extra water to help this process.

But my mother is pushing me to give her water in a bottle on hot hot days. I dont plan to, but wondered if anyone else had?

Re: Giving water to newborns.

  • Not to a newborn. They get all the hydration from formula or breastmilk. Giving a newborn water is actually setting them up for failure to thrive. They have very small stomachs and will get full off of water which gives no nutrition or calories. If your mother is that adament about it I would take her along to your pedi visits and let the pedi tell her.

  • My mom kept asking the same thing when my son was a newborn in the summer, I just kept politely explaining that he was fine and times had changed. She's  a superfreak about hydration issues anyway because she had gastric bypass, I kept trying to deter her from bringing her own issues into it.

You are right and your mother is wrong ;-)

BM actually changes consistency to hydrate a baby as needed.  When it's hot, baby will also want to nurse more often - meaning she'll get more foremilk to stay hydrated.  Giving a newborn water can actually be quite dangerous.

  • Nope, no water here.  He got all he needed from me.

  • This was actually my biggest fight with my mom when DD was little. She kept pushing us to give her water (although she's a September baby, so she was 9 or 10 months before it got really hot here) and I kept explaining to her that it can actually be quite bad for the little ones. I asked my pedi and she said that a little bit was ok, but that they do get all their hydration needs met by breastmilk/formula. So no, we didn't give DD any water for probably the first 6 months, and then a little bit after that.
  • i posted a question about this last week on the 3 to 6 month board. my pedi said that only when its very hot to give dd maybe 2 oz of water but other than that not to.

  • Ditto everyone else. No water for newborns.

DD was an autumn baby, so the only time this came up for us was when she had a bad stomach virus and we were worried about dehydration, but even then the pedi said water actually tends to make them sicker, and to stick to formula / BM.

Tried to find a link to a reputable source (ie. not just a message board - I know how mom's can be Wink that you could show your mom. Doing a quick search, this is all I got, but I'm sure there's more out there.

  • No, no, no, no, no. I haven't read the above responses, but I can't emphasize enough how you need to trust that your child will get the hydration she needs from breast milk.

DD was born in late May and went through a very hot summer with very little air conditioning and the first time she ever had water was when we introduced solids in the fall.

  • no water for newborns.

giving water (or too diluted formula) to infants can cause hyponatremia (low sodium levels in the blood) and can lead to seizures.  you are right-all your baby needs is your bm.
