tummy sleeping

So lo was sleeping through the night most nights but on his tummy. Well we went to his two month appointment and I mentioned to the doctornot his normal pedi that he dosent sleep on his back . And she made me feel so guilty and parinoid about sids that we are back to attempting to get hime to sleep on his back. He has been for about 4 hours but he wakes up and I can't get him back down . I just don't know what is better sleeping and being parinoid or not sleeping .

Re: tummy sleeping

  • What about getting an Anglecare monitor? We have one for our LO and I love the peace of mind it gives me. My LO sleeps on her back as she likes it, but if yours likes his tummy, I bet this monitor would ease your mind.

  • My doctor fully believes in babies sleeping on their backs. However at LOs 2 month appt she asked if we put him on his back to sleep at night and I truthfully answered no. I explained our reasoning behind it and she just double checked that he sleeps on a firm mattress that has a tight sheet on it, nothing else in the bed with him, and that we aren't using bumpers (he's in a PnP so that's not an issue). She was ok with our decision based on our discussion and I feel that you are the mom and you should do what you feel is best for yourself and LO. As long as your LO can turn their head easily while on their stomach then it shouldn't be a problem.

  • DD sleeps on her tummy, and has been for a little over a month now.  DH was nervous about it at first, but she honestly sleeps better this way.

At her 2 month appt the nurse asked about how she slept, and I told her the truth.  She told me that the doctor would mention it's not recommended, but its our choice. She also told me that's how her own children slept.

I'd say if your LO has good neck control and does well sleeping on her tummy, go for it.

  • Not that I'm any sort of medical professional, but if tummy sleeping was working for your LO and your family, don't let the pediatrician make you feel guilty.  I honestly switched doctors at my practice because I was tired of feeling guilty... for having him come to our bed at 4 am when he won't go back to sleep, for not giving vitamin d drops because he won't take them (and he's EBF so hardly bottle fed), you name it, if it wasn't by the book, she made me feel guilty.

On the other hand, I think SIDS is the one thing that they make you feel the most paranoid about because it's such an unknown.  Good luck with the transition to back sleeping, but don't be afraid to go back to your old ways if it was working.

This exactly. Our pedi tried to make us feel guilty too. And lectured us on DD tummy sleeping. I understand the risks. But I also know that it's not healthy for a baby to sleep for 30 min at a time all night either.

If your LO has good neck control, and you felt comfortable with it to begin with. Go for it. We have a video monitor. And it makes us feel a lot better that we can actually look at the monitor and see her breathing.

ETA: We're also thinking about switching pedi's. She does not care about mother's instinct or how we feel at all. Just by the book.
