Babies: 6 - 9 Months

7 month old son's arms stay back

my son's arms stay backwards, they can be moved forward but he prefers them behind him and its mainly his right arm. the pediatrician said he might be double jointed. he rolls over then gets stuck on his side when his arm is behind him and he doesn't know to lift his arm to turn. he has his arms behind him when anyone holds him and when he is in jumperoo. I didn't know if this is normal.

and also what age is it ok for babies to sleep with blankets, pillows, bumpers?

  • I have no idea about the first part of your post, but as for the second, I would assume it's after their 1st birthday when the risk of SIDS goes way down. I probably won't let my lo sleep with blankets/pillows/bumpers until closer to 2 yrs. old.

This is one of those things that is hard to picture from a post.  Developmentally babies will hold their arms out and back behind them as a rule when they are very young.  As babies age they may still do this but they should start to bring their arms forward and relax them down, if you allow them to curl forward like in a slouchy sitting position their arms should come with them.  If babies are working hard trying a new skill or get otherwise worked up their arms will tend to return to the out and back position.  Babies bones aren't anywhere near complete at this stage.  They don't have fully formed joints the way we do, that is why they are so flexible, this may be what you doctor is referring to.
