When do you consider a child to be potty trained?

Started training Nate on Saturday. He's only had 1 pee accident since Sunday morning but still hasn't pooped in the potty yet. He's staying dry during naps and is waking up in the morning dry. He's wearing a Pull Up only for sleep time, the rest of the time he is in underwear. It's only been 4 days, so I am leary to say that he is pee trained at this point, but I really, really want to get rid of the diapers that I have left, but am worried about a possible regression. I have probably 2 full packs of diapers left, and I'd love to be able to just give them away or possibly donate.

I think the liklihood of a regression is much higher if you keep the diapers around.,

I started this weekend with Max and your DS is doing better than him.  I have no diapers in the house though (Pullups only at sleeptime) and have no plans to buy more!

He sounds like he is doing great!

  • He doesn't know that I have the diapers. I told him that the diaper fairy came and took them for another baby LOL

  • Once, we went out of diapers we never looked back despite the # of accidents we had (which were numerous for months, 1 month nothing but pee another nothing but poop).  When he was mostly not having any accidents of any kind (but some reminders and help), I considered him trained.  For DD, it was literally overnight, take away diapers = PTed.

Daycare/Preschool defines completely PTed as can pull up and down pants, wipes and can go to the restroom without prompting.   Sans any accidents.

  • As the self-appointed Board Expert on this topic, I consider a child potty trained when the child knows when they need to go to the toilet, makes it there without accidents, and you are comfortable throwing away the diapers.  Until then, or if the mom suggests it or takes the child or is fixated on the subject, the mom may be 'potty trained' but the child isn't.  You're welcome.
  • It's when they know they have to go, and go.

Ian was PT'd at 3.5.  He was pee trained after one day, but it took him almost 2 months of poop accidents before he was fully (day) trained.  He still wears underjams at night because he sleeps so soundly he doesn't wake up to pee.  I swear, I could contort him into different positions and he'd stay asleep.
