What kind do you have? I need 2, plus one for bottom of stairs. I've heard tension ones aren't recommended, but some are sold as such. I don't know what to get.

You've seen tension gates sold as top of stairs? really?? Some of them have the ability to be either tension or screwed in. Look at the fine print to see.
Actually we also have it blocking off the bathroom and office too. I found a second one for $20 at a consignment shop - totally worth buying second hand if you can fine some... they're expensive and it's not like they get ruined.
It can change to almost any size and the way our top of our stairs are, there's a decorative wood banister thing at the top that would be painful to drill into. So having this we were able to set it back from the immediate top of the stairs and just screw it into regular walls that can more easily be patched when we're done.
Re: top of stairs baby gate
We got the Evenflo Top of Stair Gate for the top of the stairs and for the bottom of the stairs, we had one like this.

We have this at the bottom of the stairs: https://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Secure-Extra-Walk-Thru/dp/B0000DEW91

This one says it's pressure mounted and that it's a top of stairs gate, but it comes with these mounting cups that you screw into the wall so that it isn't just pressure mounted... We have this one at the top of our stairs:

This one appears to be tension and sold as top of stairs. Maybe I'm reading wrong. That's always possible!

Look here at the instructions - there are special mounting things that screw into the walls for it too.
Jill, you're the best at knowing things!
Thanks.

Kind of expensive... we bought it cuz it's pretty (and tall and secure).
I'm going to make an AWESOME big brother.
