I don't think Palin helped, but Bush and the state this country is in is what I think. People want something new and for alot of them Mc Cain represents the same old Bush way of doing things.

Bush and Palin. If he had stayed the same McCain that ran in 2000, he might've gotten my vote, but by hiring all of Bush's campaign team he turned into a GOP/Bush clone and lost it.

In addition to all of the above (Bush, his age, Palin, etc.) I can't say that he really spent ANY time talking about his action plans. I didn't feel that he did well in the debates and how a candidate handles himself in difficult situations is a BIGGIE for me. Finally, I don't feel like he was campaigning for all American's - all I heard about was his promise to protect the EXTREMELY wealthy.

I think the biggest factor is that people are disillusioned with Bush right now...........and so a lot of people just wanted a change and that was it, Obama has a very thin resume, and while that would hurt a lot of politicians this year it was a benefit to him, he hasn't been around long enough for people to really know much about him other then he is different then the establishment.

It's a mixed bag IMO. The economy, Bush, the current state of the republican party and Palin. I will say that Palin propably appealed to the far right - but did not appeal to me, who is more in the middle.

Palin, Bush, and the fact that he did way less advertising/campaigning. I mean, Obama got his name out there in a big way. He outspent McCain in campaign advertising 4 to 1.

My husband said the same thing and the last republican he supported was reagan. he said in the last 8 years he really followed in bush's footsteps and changed his ways. Mccain 2000 was a much better politician. Maybe he thought that was the way to get elected, but it wasn't.

I am an independent voter and while I have traditionally voted Dem, I also have only been old enough to vote in now three elections, so that's hardly a "pattern" IMO. What drew me away from McCain was his voting record being too close to Bush's, Palin combined with his age in a big way, and his healthcare plan, which would not really help stem the growing crisis in American healthcare.
