And it is NOT a small one.

I'm pretty pissed. I thought we were done with this months ago. And I thought we had paid our max amount (though I admit I don't understand insurance stuff)

The first two we got were for me, one large, one small. This one I got in April was for Asher. I really dislike insurance, I feel like we pay so much every month. Getting bills this large should be illegal.

  • That blows. There should clearly be a window in which all bills must be mailed. And, it should be a much shorter window than 8 months!

I would be jealous too! The only fee we had to pay (for all of the pregnancy and delivery) was $30 to get a private room (our insurance covered $240 of the 270 cost.)

Just so everyone else knows: I'm not making this a political debate, I just want Jkat to move to Canada.

Does Canada just let anyone move in? Cause, if so, I want to come, too. I really want to live in Victoria.

And, PS JKat, we paid thousands out of pocket for M's birth (and my hospital bedrest and stay), too. Working for a super small company sucks.

I paid $600 for Lainey and $600 for me (including all prenatal care and c-section/anesthesiologist/assistant surgeon) and that was all I ever heard from the hospital.

I want your insurance. I only had one drug while in labor and only took motrin afterward. No issues with DS, and I paid well over that.

  • Maybe try to get an added policy on to your insurance. Sorry can't help, my work only left us a bill for $50. And that was for the phone and tv. Everything including all appts was covered. Now lets talk about Hunter's PT for his neck. I am still getting those bills 5 months later.

Let's just say, his neck better be perfect for the price in PT I have paid.

  • I am still receiving bills from the RE who helped us conceive our son.  I was so confused by the bills that my Dad made a spreadsheet for me detailing exactly what the charges were, what we had paid out of pocket, what the insurance adjustments were, and what the insurance company had paid out of pocket.  It was depressing.  Thanks Dad, I think.

Ever since I've seen the Michael Moore documentary Sicko (although I'm not a huge MM fan), I've wanted to move to Canada for this reason alone. Now I have 2 reasons: no huge hospital bills AND seeing becc's hot butt all the time!

Right? I'm shocked MM didn't talk about my butt in that movie! MOVE HERE!!

Well it's kind of weird how my situation is. My pseudo-hubster and I aren't married, so he can't put me on the insurance he gets through work, so my dad, being the splendid sort of fellow he is, just continued to have me on his policy. Thing is though, right around December (when Ronan was born, surprise surprise) they decided that since I wasn't a full time student at any point during 2010, they didn't have to cover me, even though they'd been covering me all year up until that point. Soooo because my insurance company's a bunch of big mean poopy heads we got stuck almost $13 grand in debt, however, my dad's actual employer, being the sort of splendid people they are, paid my $770 bill for the anesthesiologist, so that took it from almost $13000 to right around $12000 even. Right now, however, is the prime time for my fiance to edit his policy because right around now is when it doesn't take forever, so I'm trying to get him to just take a day off one of these days so we can just go to the effing courthouse and get hitched so I don't have to deal with Aetna anymore.

I wasn't judging!!!! It was more of a thank goodness I didn't have to worry about that.

It was a huge pain in the butt working around our insurance when DD was born. They tried to tell us they didn't have to pay for her NICU stay because she wasn't already covered and we didn't get approval. It sucked.

I didn't think you were hun! It was more of  an "Ugh this is what's going on and it sucks major bawls, I don't like it, not one bit" thing and not a "U DON'T NO MY LYFE!" moment, I promise! I'm sorry if I made it sound like it though, lol. That sucks about your insurance company trying to get out of covering your DD though, I hate dealing with insurance companies, period, in my experience most spend more time trying to get out of paying for stuff than actually paying.

Move to Ottawa! I'm not there anymore but it's close, and way cooler than yucky Toronto.

Also, I had no idea it cost so damn much there to have a baby! This whole thread is crazy!

  • We are still receiving bills as well. It's ridiculous. And they are all coming from different places- I wish all of the health care providers could just get together and give us ONE bill because it's really disheartening to think, YAY, we've paid everything off! only to receive another bill a few weeks later from someone we didn't even know we owed to. Plus our current insurance is awful so most of this is coming out of pocket. Thankfully I am switching insurance providers which goes into effect this week so when we have another baby we won't have to pay nearly as much!

You may to see if you can find info about the healthcare bills that Obama signed last year. I am pretty sure that children can stay on their parents ins until age 26 regardless of if they are a student or not or if they live with their parent or not. I don't know for sure when it went into effect though. It wouldn't hurt to research it a little and see if you could appeal to your dad's insurance.
