Re: [LATE, sorry!] The SAHM Book Club Weekly Check-In

  • Sorry this check-in is late... DH and I spent all 3-day weekend turning Emily's room into a real "big girl" room, complete with all new furniture and decor (and about a day and a half cleaning, ugh!) and I was working hard on preparing/freezing the last of the meals on my list.  :)

I actually fell asleep reading The Queen's Gambit last night with only 12 pages to go, ha!  It's such a great book!

LBR:  Water for Elephants  (enjoyed it, it held my interest, but it wasn't one of my all time faves)

  • My goodness, MrsShavers, it's getting so close to your due date.  You're sounding very organized and ready for the arrival of #2!

Gatogrrl 12/30 CR:  Be Near Me
    LBR: A Widow's Story: A Memoir

I had to put Moby Duck down because A Widow's Story by Joyce Carol Oates came in at the library and it had to be read fast.  It's quite dark in how it deals with her terror, loneliness, and hopelessness after her husband of 47 years suddenly dies.  Lots of talk of suicide.  But it's also full of insights and little moments that I identified with.  The image of her backing out of the hospital room after her husband dies, because she can't bear to turn her back on him forever, will always stay with me.  Joan Didion did a similar memoir a few years earlier but I liked this one so much better.

  • Oooh. This sounds like fun! I have a goal on my blog to read 50 of the 100 greatest books of all time before I turn 30 (Dec. 2012). I have read 13 of them so far so I guess my goal for this year is to read a total of 25 so I need to read 12 more. (at least) and I will most likely have "other" books in the mix too :)

CR: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

LBR: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (list), Water for Elephants (fun)

Comments: Huck Finn was fun though boring at times. Kind of dragged on. Water for Elephants was a good story, not my favorite but still kept my interest. I may want to see the movie too.

  • This week was a good reading week!  I finished Midwives by Chris Bohjalian (awesome awesome read!) and I also read Divergent by Veronica Roth (really good, especially if you like the Hunger Game trilogy), Live to Tell by Lisa Gardner (good police thriller), Magic Hour by Kristin Hannah (my favorite of her books so far) and Dead Reckoning (the newest True Blood book and one of my guilty pleasures).  Now I am reading Love You More by Lisa Gardner and it's really good so far.  I have now read 71 books toward my goal of 111.

MrsShavers- do you need someone to cover the weekly check-ins for the next few weeks seeing as how you will probably be just a tad bit busy?  :)

    LBR:  Marrying Daisy Bellamy

    *Possible Spoilers*

I finally finished it, yay!  It was pretty good.  I found myself skipping a little bit, but the over all story was entertaining.  My favorite part was at the end the guy gets stationed at Vance AFB, which happens to be in my town!  Which is kind of funny, the base isn't very big and neither is my town.  We don't get a whole lot of recognition.

I'm really excited about "The Hunger Games"  I've heard wonderful things about it!

    LBR: Snowfall at Willow Lake

I finished Snowfall at Willow Lake as well as reading Return. Both were good books and both are part of a series. I found myself skipping some parts of "Snowfall" though especially the beginning part.  I am now reading Fireside which is the next book after Snowfall.

  • I finally finished "Time Traveler's Wife".  I know it comes highly recommended, but I just couldn't get into it.  I kept reading, hoping it would get better, but it never really did.  I spent a lot of time forcing myself to keep reading.

As soon as I was finished, I picked up "The Hunger Games" and read it in a day and a half.  That is a great book, and very well written.  I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

    So, in summary:

10/15 books read for the year.  I'd like to up my goal to 25 books, please.

    LBR: "Hunger Games"

CR: "Undercurrent" - a teen fiction that I started last night and will probably finish tonight.  Any recommendations for my next read?

  • I finished The King's Speech.  I thought it was ok.  IMO, this is one of those instances where the movie is much better than the book.

I also read The Nanny Murders by Merry Jones.  It was a quick read and I liked it.  The author is from Philly and that's where the story is set.  It was neat to read and recognize the different neighborhoods/towns and landmarks.

This puts me at 29/60 for the year.

I'm going to stary Light on Snow (by Anita Shreve) tonight.

I read Midwives recently too and really liked it.

I see the girls talking about Divergent on the NBC all the time and wondered what it was about.  I LOVED The Hunger Games trilogy, so I'll defintiely have to check thsi out.  Is it a series?  Just wondering if there are other books that I should read first before that one.  Thanks.

  • I'm still at 11/24, and I'm still reading Gone With the Wind, but I've also picked up another book called The Wit and Wisdom of Abraham Lincoln.  Scarlet O'Hara has put me in a Civil War mood.  :-)

  • I just finished When did I get Like This and earlier this week I finished The Tiger's Wife.

I liked both books although I kept falling in and out of The Tiger's Wife.  It jumped around and I'm not sure how I feel about the way it ended.

I'm just starting Divergent thanks to a rec from here :) and I'm enjoying it so far.

    That puts me at 23/50

  • I'm at 11/25.  I finished A Murderous Procession and am currently reading American Eve.
