Two Under 2

when to start taking away "baby" items from #1?

We're going to use DD's crib, changing table, PNP, car seat, etc for LO#2.  So, when would be best to start taking these items away so they can be used for the baby?

DD will be 20 months when the baby is due and I don't want her to throw fits when all of "her" things are being given to the baby.

  • We gave our oldest daughter a "big girl bed" about a month after the baby was born, but we kept the baby in our room for 3 months.  We didn't use the PNP much, so there wasn't any "attachment" to it and your DD will probably have long out grown her infant seat by the time your next one comes around.  Honestly since she was getting "new big girl things" she didn't care what the baby was getting, hers or not.

  • I agree with PP. Plus at 20 months they dont care much about that stuff....toys maybe, but not a PNP or car seat. I would just make sure you put that stuff away maybe 2 months before...and she'll be fine. She'll have moved on to bigger and better things ;)

  • Our biggest worry was the crib. We transistion DS to a twin bed at 15 months. DD was born when he was 22 months, so he had long forgotten about the crib by them. There was no attachment with anything else, except toys.

  • The only thing I am worried about was our thought of moving LO1 to a new room so that when LO2 is our of her bassinette, she could take over the nuersey. We've since changed that and are going to give LO2 the new room. I can't take, LO1's room from her since we've always called it her room.

LO1 just moved into a toddler bed a few weeks ago, so that's done before we need to move LO2.

I'd say just do it. The more attention you bring to it the more LO1 will focus on it. Reassure LO1 that wherever/whatever she is using is her's now and the baby needs the old stuff.

Our LO1 has mastered pointing at items and naming who they belong to. We do that with a lot of things in the house. GL

  • We're moving the changing table into DS2s room, but I'm going to replace it with a toy box for DS1 so I think he'll be happy.  Other than that, I'm not "taking away" any of his stuff.  His baby stuff is long retired.
