Questions about cribs

I'm thinking we want a crib that eventually goes into toddler bed and then into headboard and footboard options.  But, I'm wondering if you seasoned mommas have opinions on conversion cribs vs. traditional cribs?  And if you have a conversion crib, are you using it for its full purpose?

Thanks!

Most of my friends have gone the full convertible route going into a full sized bed...but they decided not to use it for the full sized bed and bought new stuff. Sometimes because another baby needed the crib or they just didn't want a bed as big. Of course they can always use it later down the line.

I decided I didn't want the full bed option. Just a crib and toddler bed. I plan to use the crib for all future kids and once we are done, no longer have the crib. But it does convert to a twin bed. I also really like the traditional stying with the short ends being high and the long sides lower. We went with the Baby's Dream Ocean V2. Pottery Barn also has a similar one, so I guess that style is coming back.

I say pick a crib you love and if it has all the extra features great!

Both of ours convert to full beds.  Right now, we have 1 turned into the full and 1 still a crib.  We bought more expensive furniture knowing that we would not need to buy anything else later on.

We just got a crib that was a crib. There was an option to convert to a toddler bed, but I didn't buy it. DD made the jump straight from the crib to a twin bed.

This is my crib and I adore it: https://www.oeufnyc.com/sparrowcrib.aspx

We have it in grey and baby #2 will also use it.

Future furniture needs will probably involve a set of bunk beds and a double bed for DD. (So we can cram the kids in together when we have company.)

  • We have a convertible crib that goes to a toddler bed and then full. We're going to use it as a crib for baby#2, and then he/she will use it as a full bed with the matching furniture. I love it and am happy to keep it for a while.

  • Personally, I think they are a waste of money.  The crib that we have looks awesome and it does technically convert to a toddler bed.. but we never bought the rail.  My reasons for skipping the convertable are: 1) I wouldn't have wanted to put him in a full size bed at 2 years old.  We got a twin size that is very low to the ground and its perfect for him.  If we hadn't found such a good deal on that one, I was planning to get a toddler bed from IKEA.  2) My taste changes quite a bit... what if I didn't like that style furniture when it was time to convert?  3) Kids are rough on furniture.  Period.  I would be sick if I spent thousands of dollars on nice stuff that they are going to chew/draw/kick/throw/or otherwise abuse.  This way, I have zero expectations of any of their current furniture lasting until college.  But I also didn't spend a ton of money.  So when the time comes to replace it, there will be no heartburn.  But to each his own.  If I had fallen in love with a convertable, then I would have gotten it even if I didn't plan to convert it.  Get what you like and worry about the rest when the time comes.

  • we have two of the exact same crib in different colors, ours convert to a toddler bed (the front just comes off) and then they would convert to a full.  since we've had a litter, we haven't been able to convert anything to the full yet but I also don't think we will end up doing that after all, mostly because the conversion kit is expensive and we will most likely be getting bunk beds by the time we have another transition.  For Finn we converted to toddler bed and then when Kellen came along we put Finn right into a full size bed and gave the crib to the baby and right now Riley is in the other as a toddler bed.  But I'd say ditto Kate, go with a crib you like and the rest will follow.  oh and we did get stationary cribs only because the random recalls of drop side cribs was just something I did not ever want to deal with (or pinching my own damn fingers for that matter).  :)

  • Ours converts to a toddler bed (no kit needed), but I doubt we'll use it for one.

We have the same crib for pretty much the same reasons.

  • both boys have the exact same lifetime crib/bed.  we love them.  Jax used the crib/toddler and is now in the full bed.  ours are by young america and we love their furniture!!  The stuff we got is very neutral, so it is really timeless and can last them a long time as long as they don't beat it all up.  so far, so good.

We have gotten full use out of the conversion crib.  Just make sure you buy the rails for the bed at the same time you buy the crib.
  • We bought a convertible crib. Graham used it and #2 is going to use it. We will convert it to a big bed after when #2 is ready. We have bunk beds that G will use when we transition him to a big bed this summer.

  • we have 2 convert cribs that also can go to toddler.  I didn't buy the toddler stuff. We have one that is full bed for Nate and Wes is still in his crib. Do not know what we will do when baby #3 comes.
  • Thanks so much! There is so much to consider, oy vey.  But, thanks for weighing in.

  • We have a convertible crib and will use the conversion option when our next (and probably last) baby moves out of the crib.
