Natural Birth

Where do I even begin my research?

Good Morning ladies,

I just recently got my BFP, and now that my focus is off TTC and IF treatments, I can finally focus on the birth I want for my baby. I have bought Ina May's book (not here yet), but I need help finding good places to research the actually birth process and what I want for the baby (eye drops, etc). Does Ina May's book provide this info or is there another source to look at?

Thanks for your help ladies! I have lurked here forever, and it feels great (and still in shock!) to be able to post here! :)

  • Congrats! Pregnancy is a wacky ride, and it's pretty unbelievable up until you have a baby in your arms (though frankly, being a parent is a whole other insane journey, hee hee). Anyhoo, to answer your question:

"The Thinking Woman's Guide to Birth" by Henci Goer is a really great read to learn about standard hospital interventions. It's about ten years old, but most of it still holds true, and it gives you a good idea about what you can ask your provider does in certain circumstances.

This blog is also a good resource: https://birthsense.org/, it's by a midwife who practices in the hospital, but supports low-intervention birth. She has this specific post about what questions to ask your provider to help figure out if they truly support low-intervention birth: https://www.themidwifenextdoor.com/?p=769

As for newborn procedures, this is a good overview of what to expect: https://pregnancy.about.com/cs/newbornbabies/a/babytests.htm

  • Once you've informed yourself and researched the type of birth you want, I think the best thing you can do is research and tour hospitals (assuming you're planning a hospital birth and not a home or birth center birth).  DH and I chose our hospital because it had the lowest c-section rate in the area, as well as service by MWs instead of OBs and an attitude that was open to natural birth.  You can convince your medical provider as much as you like during your appointments, but in most cases that person is not going to be the person delivering your baby.  So, in my opinion, the best thing you can do is find an institution that shares your values.  I've heard a lot of hospital stories lately (all my friends are having babies!) and the experiences vary so much depending on where each person was.

Good luck and I hope you have a happy and healthy 9 months!

  • When I was in your shoes, I found that the best thing to do at first was to sit here and just read, read, read. With no agenda, no searching, nothing pre-conceived. Whenever I read a thread with a term I hadn't heard, or a link I hadn't seen, or a class or technique that looked interesting, I opened another tab and started googling. That lead me to books to buy and classes to take, as well as a braod knowledge base from the threads here.

    Good luck :)

Thank you so much ladies for all of your book recommendations! Surprise mom - that is what I plan to do -- read, read, read! Thank goodness I have the summer to get started on that! :)

I look forward to posting more with you ladies! I am sure I will have LOTS of questions! :)
