Nestie Gardeners, How is it going?

How is everyone's plants going?

My tomato started so strong and then I think over watered it. It looks like it's getting better. The one from aggieoj is growing but no tomatoes yet.

My basil is doing good. Thyme going crazy. Cilantro flowered without really  producing any good leaves. I'm hoping it'll re-seed and start over. My mint plant was beautiful but then something ate it. Like literally eating it leaf by leaf. I removed some small bugs that I hope were doing the eating so it'll come back.

Re: Nestie Gardeners, How is it going?

  • Its really DH's garden :)

The jalepenos are coming in strong, we get a couple almost every day.  We've had a couple bell peppers but the tomatoes are still green.  DH was very proud of his 4 ears of corn yesterday and we should have more later in the week.  We've only had two cucumbers, I don't know what's going on with those.  Cilantro looks like its dying but the sage, basil and mint are going strong.

  • I have 2 teeny little cilantro plants and 2 little basil ones.  I'm hoping they give me something I can use.

I have about 20 cucumber plants and I'm hoping (MC told me that they can grow big and even flower and never get a fruit on them!  EGADS!!) I get at least one cuke from each one.  :)

My pepper plants are getting flowers and there looks to be a couple of little bitty peppers growing too.  Onions are growing slowwwwlllyyyy.  Beans are growing pretty good, I think there's a bean or two on a couple of the plants.

It pains me that I am out of town! Jon sent me video of the garden, though.

Eggplants were dropped off at boxermomma's last night. I don't know how many and I don't know if there are still some growing.

Green pepper plant has yielded 5 so far. Red pepper seems to drop the pepper before they are ready. Jalapeno, 2 growing.

Strawberries have had a few come out, but the bugs like them too much. Basil is growing like a week. Cucumbers have flowered  but only one cuke grew (so far). Butternut squash is growing like crazy and we have two melons on the way.

    I think that's it.

  • I wouldn't call myself a gardener, AT ALL. The only thing I have are the two tomato plants from aggieoj. But they are doing awesome! Both are huge and have tons of little tomatoes on them. The first couple just started turning red/orange this weekend.

i'm so excited! This is the first thing i've tried to grow that i haven't killed!

Maybe I'll venture into trying to grow something else!

  • I'm jealous of y'alls' green thumbs.

I mowed the front yard this weekend. And I mulched.  Does that count?  lol

  • I think I'm about a month behind y'all in the growing season.  Any tips, experienced gardeners (that doesn't mean you, MC)?
  • I am so jealous of the eggplant.  We had 3 plants last year, got lots of flowers but never any fruit.  We only have one plant this year, a few flowers but no fruit so far.

Serranos are going crazy, even better than last year.  We've had 3 cucumbers so far and are about to pick 2 more.  That sucker has basically taken over the garden.  We have a ton of tomato plants, mostly cherry.  We've gotten one red one and have 5 or 6 green ones, and lots of flowers.

We have way too many herbs to list.  All are doing great except for the dill that the squirrels ate.  Grr!

One of our fig trees is not looking good.  It was great last year, even produced some figs, but now the leaves are yellowing.  It's the same spot as before and the watering schedule should be similar.  DH thinks it needs a bigger pot so I guess he'll transplant it soon.  Anyone have other suggestions on that?

  • Oh!  I forgot my favorite, the orange peppers.  The plants have gotten huge and have some flowers but no fruit yet.  I LOVE orange peppers and they are so freakin' expensive.  We're really hoping this will be the year we get some (they've died each time in the past).
  • I way over bought on tomato plants. They are taking over, but producing a lot of little cherry tomatoes and yellow tear drop tomatoes, which is good. The basil and chives are great. My strawberries haven't produced anything and my peppers haven't grown at all! My spaghetti squash is going strong and I have a vine producing an interesting fruit- it's shaped like a long neck yellow squash or tear drop tomato, but big and pale green with light stripes running vertically. It's pretty, but wtf is it?

In non veg news, my hydrangeas are super wilty, my azaleas are all brown and fuzzy, and many of my impatiens look like they are chewed off! I'm watering the first two a ton but stumped on the last. I don't think we have bunnies and I know we don't have deer. I haven't seen snails either.

I have a tomato plant question.  We're trying to start tomato plant seedlings and I just noticed a grayish fluff on the soil.  I suspect mold.  Has anyone had this experience?

DS and I planted cucumber seeds and zinnia seeds (from a Miracle-Gro Kids kit) and they've both sprouted!  I think I'm more excited about it then he is. lol!

That totally counts. I mowed the yard for the first time ever a couple weeks ago and I felt so accomplished.

I have no advice Joyco. I had a couple tomatoes show up and then I killed it my over watering.

Has anyone grown any fruit trees? Growing up I had an orange, lemon and peach tree in our backyard. I wonder how those will do here in Austin?

    You mean "any at all"?

umm... prepping you for the fact that you will not have jars and jars of pickles counts, joy.

oh, and get on that family feud, already.

  • I have squash, onions, cilantro, and tomatoes. All of it is HUGE! It is my first year ever trying to grow anything and it has all done really really well. I can't wait to eat some!! :-)

Had to post a photo. :)  Cucumbers are in the green tray and zinnias are the blue.

  • Mine is meh, my tomato plant is huge, but it has only produced 1 tomato and there are only 2 more tiny ones growing.  Hopefully it is just a little behind.  Same with my pepper plants, they look good and have flowered, but no peppers yet.  I also have 2 tomatillo plants that look good but no produce.  My herbs are all doing well except my cilantro.  This is my 3rd year to try it and I'm about ready to give up on it.  My MIL told me this weekend that it is more of a fall plant so maybe thats why.

We have an orange tree that has done quite well for the past 2 years.  We bought it at a farmers market and were told it was a lemon tree, but turns out it was an orange!  This year we got about 10 oranges off of it.  It is planted in a very large pot so that we can bring it inside when it gets too cold.  I think that is key for citrus plants in this region, unless you make sure you cover it during freezes.

  • I'm pleasantly surprised at how well my herbs are doing.  I initially tried growing them from seeds and killing all of them.  Then I bought some small herb plants.  They are doing very well in their containers on the back patio.  I used some of the parsley last week too!  Maybe next year, I'll try vegetables.

My houseplants have been overrun by gnats and I'm battling them right now.  :(

We're having this problem.  We got two cukes a couple weeks ago but nothing since.  Lots of flowers but they all abort :(

This book has been a great guide for us.  It was rec'd to me by an organic farmer at our local farmer's market last year.

  • We've had a few squash. I have cherokee purple tomatoes and yellow pear tomatoes coming in already. My other two varieties have bloomed but no fruit, yet.  A lot of times when you get all plant, no fruit, it's too hot. Moving the plants (if they're mobile) to a breezier location can help. My pole beans aren't getting enough drainage so they're struggling. The anise is doing great. My seed-carrots haven't come in yet, so I don't know that they will- I planted everything pretty late.  The peppers are starting to come in as well.

As far as herbs go, my lemon balm, spearmint, chocolate mint and the basils- pineapple and something else (?) are going crazy. I have about half dozen others that are good.

Cilantro is a fall/ winter plant. It's beyond growing season and really hard to keep alive now.

  • I'm jealous... my garden is doing terrible this year.  New house, new bed... not sure what the problem is though.

I have gotten 2 squash and a handful of strawberries so far.  But, my tomatoes, sugar snap peas and green beans are all struggling.  My watermelons vines are growing but nothing yet.  Also, my zucchini plants are huge but nothing yet.  I've never had a problem with tomatoes but this year NOTHING so far.  Makes me sad!

I tried a blueberry plant but it killed over pretty quick.  :(

  • Cilantro is a winter herb, that's why it's dying now.  I know, I want it in the summer, too.

We have a lemon, kumquat, fig and kaffir lime trees.  No fruit this year, but got a couple of figs last year.  The lemon had some flowers earlier but no fruit.  They are all still very young.  Definitely plant fruit trees in pots so that you can bring them in.  I think if it gets under 40 they need to come in.  I make DH baby ours b/c I don't want to lose them.

We also have the book Ali mentioned and I second its awesomeness.

  • We have 8 tomato plants (asst) and all but 2 are doing really well.  I am most surprised by the green zebra (heirloom) we have had 2 tomatoes from it already and have 4 more that just need to ripe.  The yellow pear and sungold plants (2 each) are doing really well too!  We have 3 cuke plants and have had a few cukes come up but all have shriveled and died before being of any size.  :(  This is my biggest disappointment, my cukes did so well last year, tons of awesome cukes from them and they were so good.  I read it was probably a problem with them not getting pollinated well enough.  My squash and zucchini are doing nada.  The squash get fruits but they drop before they are good size, again pollination problem from what I understand.  Strawberries are doing ok and basil, mint and rosemary are all ok as well. Although basil is not doing nearly as well as last year.

Update- just came back in from checking garden (have not been out since Sunday morning- gone all day both days.) Squash plant has died. :(  something is eating the strawberries right before we pic them, had several almost ready and they are now all gone.  And I forgot my bush beans are doing awesome.
