Babies on the Brain

Ugh. Infant with an STD, with a question

I was reading about an infant with post-natal Chlamydia and it isn't clear whether the eye drops were given, refused, or ineffective. I want more information but I have no idea how to get it.

If a mother were to refuse eye drops, would they test her for the STD's they protect against, or would she just object as soon as the baby was born and they wouldn't administer them or check the mother?

I am honestly not sure and it would probably depend on hospital policy. In our state I think the mother can refuse all testing but has no right to refuse testing on the baby if she won't have it done herself.

  • The only person I've ever known that refused them, just said no thanks and that was that.  She might have had to sign some waiver, but I don't know.  I know she had an STD check at her pap smear about 7 months before that, but I don't think there was any testing at the time of, or after the birth.
  • Do they give the drops if you test negative?

I think so.  I think the standard eye drops protect against syphilis and chlamydia and they are given unless there is an objection.

Yes. They protect against more bacteria than just STD's.
  • I was tested during my first visit with Carter and later declined the eye goo for him. I believe I just had to sign a release. I didn't have a pap/STD test during my first appt with this one because I'd just done all that about 9 months earlier. I'll probably decline the goo again.

  • I think most moms are tested as part of a prenatal visit/PAP. I'm sure it varies by state whether you have to sign a waiver to decline the eye goop.

Even though I am STD free, they still did the eye ointment on all 3 of my babies.  During the first prenatal appointment they test for STDs.  But I suppose a mother could contract a STD at some point through out pregnancy.  I believe they tested for STDs again when I went in to give birth.  You can say no but you have to sign a waiver.  You have to sign a waiver for everything if you say no to it.

  • I know they put the eye goop on all babies, but I'm not familiar with why one would decline it.  Can someone please explain?  Thanks.

    I'm curious about this, too.

Okay then. Are there risks to it?

I dislike the idea of stuff being to my new born with out me at least being made aware of what it is. But if it's going to protect their eyes against nasty ***, then goop it up.

I have declined the test for the last several pap smears.  I've only been with my husband, and he with me so once I tested negative I didn't see the point in being tested every year.

That said, the last OB I saw mentioned that most pediatricians like to see the mother tested, even if they are sure the test will be negative.  They just like to see that negative in the chart and ensure there is no risk for the eye problems with the baby.

I don't have to sign anything I just say please don't run the test.  However since they are asking me to and its not that big of a deal...I'm just going to do it to make the pedi happy.

I understand declining this test.  I just don't have any information regarding the goopy stuff they put on a newborn's eyes.  I was wondering why some decline this.

  • I really don't understand refusing the STD test. What can it hurt?

Is it an issue of money/insurance or something?

  • For a lot of babies it can cause extreme skin irritation around the eyes and face which is the primary reason a lot of parents request that it not be administered. I was checked at my 8 week exam, along with my 8 week exam about 6 months before for my first pregnancy and for peace of mind I'll have another check done in 4-6 weeks because I plan on declining the treatment.
  • it is a prophylactic antibiotic eye ointment. Birth is dirty (messy), and STD risk aside, there are bacterial concerns with the baby passing so close to mom's anus. Sure you can decline, but doing so could put baby at risk for bacterial eye infections literally caught during birth.
