XP: Reflux/Gas

I need some help ladies. The past two nights have been very strange. DS usually sleeps very well, but the last 2 nights he has been miserable. He starts with lots of spit up/coughing/gagging at about 10 pm that continues until 1 or 2 am. He cries whenever I lay him down. He also gets terribly gassy: arching his back, etc. He wants to eat the entire time for the sucking/soothing, but that seems to make it worse and he gets mad at the paci. He finally settles down at about 3 am.  I don't know how to make him feel better. Any ideas? Cut dairy? Why would it just start now when he's been great since birth? Medicine? Help! Thanks for your help!

Re: XP: Reflux/Gas

  • DD has a very similar pattern and nothing really keeps her sleeping from about 1-4am.  My started using Mylicon drops and that seems to have helped the gas.  But I think that's just her pattern for now.  It seems like everything changes with her every day or so, so I would just wait and see if things change.

  • My LO has been gassy since day 1.  After a crying episode that lasted 2 1/2hrs, I called the pediatrician who told me that I can give him the gas drops before every feeding.  That seems to be helping, but the last couple of nights he has been fussy for no reason at all.

Its very possible that its reflux--reflux doesn't usually show up right away. Our pedi explained that its not until the baby's esophagus is irritated from the stomach acid that the baby starts complaining and having symptoms even if they were always having reflux issues. For our DD, its always worse at night because she spends more time lying on her back.

Some things that have helped us--keeping the baby upright or at least at a 45 degree angle for at least 30 minutes after every feeding (yeah, that sucks at 3 am), being careful to not over-feed so DD isn't too full, cutting dairy from my diet (still wondering if that helped, and finally medication as a last resort.

    Good luck!
