Any foods you don't give?

Just curious what foods are still "off limits" for your LO?

  • Chocolate and most sugary items.  Is that considered food?  Although I did give her a mini chocolate chip cookie for the first time on Friday.  So would it still be considered "off limits" if I normally won't let her eat it for maybe a little while longer?

    Shellfish. Our pedi told us everything else was ok to try and watch out for any allergic reactions except for shellfish. He told us we should wait until after she turns 2.

  • We still have not given her any nuts or nut products (no history of allergy just going with the wait until 2 or 3 to be safe) I do not give her any sweet items or junk food, but family always manages to sneak in there with a cupcake or cookie at family events.

    I am pretty picky about what DD eats but there isn't much I avoid per se...when at home we try to do lots of turkey vs. red meat, whole grain vs. white bread, organic when possible.

  • Raw honey is the only thing I haven't given her at this point, and spicy foods.

    I try to stay away from processed foods; not because DD can't have it, but personally I would rather she eat whole foods with as little preservatives as I can manage for as long as I can (this will probably change when I'm working full-time again).

    EDIT to include chocolate, juice (unless I make my own with my juicer) and candy/junk food!  Obviously totally off limits for DD!!

  • Nothing really. All things in moderation. DS eats pretty healthy in general, (turkey, grilled chicken, and salads are some of his most favorite foods) but he gets bits of things that aren't all that healthy too. ::shrugs:: I guess our parenting style is pretty laid back though.
  • Fish and up until yesterday honey. He loved the honey on some homemade waffles. :)
  • In terms of allergens we haven't done nuts yet, though I keep eying the peanut butter. She hasn't had shrimp yet, either, but had lobster a few weeks ago. I haven't given her milk yet, but plan to start this week. I'm assuming she'll be fine as she eats tons of yogurt and cheese.

    I don't regularly offer sweets, but it we're at a cookout and she sees me eating a cookie or cupcake or something I'll give her small bites.

  • I'm basically the same as PPs.  I feed them organic to the best of my ability (probably 80% of their diet) but am expanding as much as possible in terms of types of foods.

    So far, we're still not doing shellfish, nuts or honey.

    My guess is they'll have all of that by the end of the summer, which will be about the 18 month mark.

  • Overly sugary, salty or fatty foods.

    For example, we won't offer candy, fast food, a stick of butter right out of the package..

  • Our pedi said nothing is off limits anymore.  We do not give him junk food, fast food, or shellfish. 

    I would be happy if he never had fast food!

  • Hot dogs for both of my kids. I had a hot dog get stuck in my throat (below my windpipe, at the site of a surgical scar) when I was in second grade and had to have it surgically removed. As a result hot dogs scare the crap out of me. It's likely I'd avoid them anyway since we eat very little that's processed or prepackaged to begin with (I wasn't raised on food like that and most of it doesn't taste right to me), but the fear of choking with them sets me over the edge (totally irrationally). My SIL lets her kids eat them and I have to walk away because it makes me so anxious.

    Otherwise, nothing is really off limits. At home we eat pretty much all whole foods, whole grains, lean protein, and a lot of fruits and veggies. If we're out somewhere or someone else has them I don't protest what they eat anymore because I know that they are healthy eaters at home. I'm not thrilled when my aunt or ILs take them for fast food since I don't eat it, but my protesting didn't work and I want them to have alone time with older relatives so I got over it.

    He's had pretty much everything else. We just recently gave him shrimp.
  • My pedi said no peanuts or shellfish until two. Other than that, the only foods I don't offer are hard, crunchy foods because DD still doesn't have any molars. Everything else in moderation.
  • Nothing is off limits for us. Everything in moderation... including *gasp* junk food. She is a pretty good eater and would eat strawberries and clementines over a cookie anyway. She has tried peanut butter, shellfish, honey, ect.

  • I'm a working mother and have a pretty hectic schedule. No food is off limits for Tegan, she gets bites of whatever I'm eating, even the occasional cookie/candy item. However, I've never just handed her a whole cookie/sucker, etc. and probably won't till she's a bit older. I was raised with a nightly dessert and will raise Tegan that way when she's old enough to grasp the desser concept. She does get some processed food (mainly Gerber meals), but I'm working on phasing some of them out this summer. She's a picky eater and literally would sometimes go all day without eating if it I didn't feed her some of the foods that I know she'll eat. Since she's had weight gain issues in the past and is still barely in the 25th percentile, it makes me nervous when she doesn't eat.

  • DD won't be having popcorn, raw apples or salad until she is 5. That is the new recommendation for those choking hazards. She eats apples but I bake them in the oven so they are soft. I was in a minimall with a restaurant attached where I had my business. I was doing my bank deposit when a Dad came screaming out of the restaurant into the mall holding his 2 or 3 year old. Paramedics came bursting in and tried to save her. She died from eating a piece of lettuce that got stuck. I can still see the Dad's face as he ran holding her. So no chances for us. Sorry if that is a bummer response.

    Oh yeah, I didn't think about popcorn! There are, of course, foods that without enough teeth and more advanced chewing skills, toddlers shouldnt be eating.

  • fast food (i dont eat it either..ive actually never had a fast food burger or nugget in my entire life).  and popcorn, since its a choking hazard. other than that, all is fair game.

    they dont get much sugar but that is because i do not to like to share. if there are cookies or candy in the house, its MINE.

  • Nothing is really off limits anymore.  We have been cautious with a few things b/c DH has a ton of allergies, but it looks like Snuggle doesn't have any.  There are some things that Snuggle does not eat or has not tried, but that's b/c we haven't served it yet, not b/c we are purposefully keeping it away from him.

    This is for us too. He has juice almost everyday and with it being hotter out, its a way to get him to drink more when he's outside. I gave him a few m&m's the other day too.. oh no.. I went to Culinary School, so he eats pretty well lol

  • We steer clear of junk food, fast food and overly-processed stuff. Other than that, DS has had most things. He doesn't have molars though, so he still doesn't get a lot of meats like steak, pork chops, etc.

  • The only food I actively avoid is shellfish, because I have an allergy to it and I just don't want to risk it early. Well, soda too, actually. I've seen kids younger than Zack drinking soda and I just don't get why you would offer that to a growing child.

    As for everything else, I let him try pretty much anything but limit the unhealthy foods.

  • DD eats all foods in terms of food types.  But she's never had fast food, dessert (other than on her birthday), or anything overly processed.  She has had chicken nuggets a couple of times at a restaurant that had a kids' menu and I didn't order something she would like (I detest kids' menus - I think they're insulting).
