Food Allergy

testing for allergies ?

Hi ladies I didn't know this boad was here so I apologize if this question has been asked a hundred times.  But what does food allergy testing involve?  I have had skin testing when I was in high school but now this is for my baby.

I have a 9 month old, DH growing up was allergic to milk, eggs, wheat, cherries, strawberries, peanuts...I had problems (I would say sensitivity) to fresh fruits and veggies and allergy to banannas.

we have been very slow to introducing food and she seems to be doing well, but she is small for her age and I want her to eat more but I'm scared to introduce alot of stuff

what is my next step??

Re: testing for allergies ?

  • Hello! For us, we got a blood test at the Pedi first and after that showed up with dairy, eggs and peanuts, Pedi wanted us to confirm with a skin test with the allergist, which we did. Jacob was about 10m old.

  • first is the scratch / prick test and then they will send you to get blood work.  I think every doctor does things differently since my pedi didn't want blood taken until he's one but the pricking test went terribly wrong (his entire body was swollen) so due to the extreme sensitivity from the pricking test, they wanted to test him for the top 8 imminently.

I think since she hasn't had any reactions, your doc will probably want to wait until she's one to do a blood test.. i bet you they probably won't even bother with the pricking since allergies run in your family.

good luck and hope she has no allergies!

  • When DD reacted to peanuts at 18 months, the pedi did a blood test.  When it came back postitve, we took her to an allergist to confirm with a skin prick test.
