POSTED IN CAREERS FOR LIFE
Can you imagine being able to perform an ultrasound from the comfort of your home? With the new MobileUS for smartphones, you can now use this essential diagnostic tool at your convenience by simply connecting a USB wire to your smartphone. This new application enables you to monitor the kidney, liver, bladder, and eyes, endocavity probes for prostate cancer and uterine screenings and biopsies. It also has vascular probes for imaging veins and arteries for starting IVs and central lines. All you need to get started is a wand, some gel and your smartphone.
These commercial ultrasound probes are compatible with Microsoft Windows Mobile-based smartphones. Although this ultrasound monitoring device is not intended for the commercial market right away, the idea is that this portable medical device could become essential in being able to develop the world and diagnose problems much faster. Despite the scarcity of trained medical experts, most of the population has access to a cell phone and will be able to utilize this technology. Commercial ultrasound machines are often times expensive and can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Other portable versions for laptops can run up to $30k. Some of the USB-based probes only run about $2000 and the goal is to bring them down to $500.
David Zar, creator of the first USB ultrasound probe and Research Associate in Computer Science and Engineering at Washington University said, ?Twenty-first century medicine is defined by medical imaging, yet 70 percent of the world?s population has no access to medical imaging it?s hard to take an MRI or CT scanner to a rural community without power.? Now with this new ultrasound imaging application, you can have the portability and reliability that some of the more expensive machines offer.
