Babies on the Brain

Are pumps recyclable?

i know you are not supposed to give them away or sell them....

But i have a pump that i am not going to use for the 2nd one.  I didn't really care for it and I am going to buy a different model  when the next one comes along.

SO- in the mean time I have this pump that at this point is just sitting there taking up space.

But, I don't want to just throw it away.  It has tons of plastic and a motor and i don't feel right throwing it away if there is a place it can be recycled.

Thoughts?

PS- it is a medela if that makes a difference.

ETA: Boo, it looks like they aren't accepting pumps right now. Maybe email them and ask if any other organizations accept them?

Or maybe someone from your church/community group could use it? They aren't technically supposed to be shared but it's worth a shot.

  • While they are a "single user product" and giving them away voids the warranty, there are tons of women out there who don't have the resources to purchase a pump new but for 30-40 dollars they can replace all the tubing, flanges, membranes... All the parts that can be contaminated. Check with your local womens shelter, la leache league, or a local doula. My mom is a doula in Florida and I know she collects all sorts of baby products including gently used pumps for the low income women she has as pro-bono clients. I'd hate to see such a valuable resource go to waste. Also, if you donate it you can claim the tax write off of the $250 donation.

If it's not hospital grade and meant for multiple users, milk can get in the pump itself and contaminate the entire system.  There is no way to sterilize the pump and buying new accessories doesn't change that.  Sounds like the OP knows this and that's why she wants ideas for disposal.

OP: Maybe a local hospital or LLL group would take it to use for demonstration purposes?

  • My pump is not hospital grade, but I'm not really sure how the pump itself would get contaminated, it is behind a rubber membrane.  I know the tubes can get milk in them, and all the other parts should not be shared, but I have never understood how the pump itself can be contaminated. I would try to find a place that will accept donations.
