NBR: Videographers or video editors?

Our wedding video is over 5 hours long. For our anniversary this year, I wanted to have someone edit it down more to 1-2 hours so that I might actually watch it once in a while.

We are not going to use the person who originally shot the video, so not sure if other videographers will be willing to do this or not. Not sure what the "rules" are... Any ideas? Any suggestions on who to call?

Re: NBR: Videographers or video editors?

  • Huh, that's a great question. I've actually had similar thoughts about our wedding photos - I'd love for a super talented photo editor to tweak a few to try and make something beautifully artistic out of them. Anyway, back to your question - IMO, the two best videographers in the area are Lifetime and Studio Z. I'm not sure that either would have the time to dedicate to the project during the peak of bridal season, but they might be willing to take on the project in the "off" season. When is your anniversary?

  • I know quite a few videographers through work and can check around with them to see if anyone is interested. If so I'll pass along their contact info! What format is the video on now? Also what price range were you thinking?

  • Bob Mills is fantastic. He was going to do this very same thing for me a few years back, but I never got all the footage together to give to him:(

At the time, he told me that it may take a while because current clients would be priority. So if you needed it sooner than later, he might not be able to do it.

He's worth a try, though. He really is amazing!

  • I need someone to edit ours, too.  But ours was taken by my BIL, who was not a pro.  I honestly think it will be hard to find a pro who will happily edit the work of another pro when the person who requested the edit is not the person who shot the video.  It is completely taboo in the photography world to edit another's work without permission directly from the photographer.  Same holds true if you buy a disc of images, and want to edit them yourself.  You just should not do it without asking the photog first.  So, I think you may be hard pressed to find a reputable videographer who is willing to infringe on the video copyright.  It is possible to have major legal issues.  KWIM?  Maybe you can find a non pro person who is into video editing that will try it for you on the down low, but I am almost sure the pros will balk at the idea.

I don't understand this logic. If I own the rights to the images, can't I do whatever I want with them (including hiring someone else to edit them)?

Videography work may be a different from photography.  People can take in home videos and have a professional video made, or even get a video collage made.  You have footage that you have the rights to so I would think you should be able to find someone to do that.  As for the people mentioned - Bob, Steve and Matt - it's the middle of wedding season and they all shoot weddings.  Another person who you might want to try is Jason Merkt (https://www.iconographystudios.com/).  He also shoots weddings, but may have more time than the other guys.

As for photography, it drives me nuts when people even crop my pictures.  It changes the picture and doesn't fully represent the photographer's style/work.  In terms of editing another photographers work, it's difficult.  I have an end result in mind when I'm shooting.  It's hard to really take another photographer's shot and make it look like yours when the composition and lighting could be funky.

Yes, but I hate my [wedding] photographer's style/work, so my entire goal is to change it. HA! I do understand that 99% of good photography is captured in camera; and, therefore, only so much can be done to improve the image (in post editing). However, a girl can dream, no? It's part of the reason we still don't have a single wedding photo framed and hung. Wink

Oh - I understand this better than anyone! I trusted someone I knew to take good pictures at my wedding.  They are AWFUL.  I can't do anything to make them better.  I was really upset about it for about a month and then I got over it.  Now, I could care less.  (I'm the lease sentimental person you know)

Why don't you get all dressed up and get married again?!? ;)  I always tell Tine I'm going to make Emery marry me again so she can take my wedding pictures! ha!

Huh, that's a great question. Anyway, back to your question - IMO, the two best videographers in the area are Lifetime and Studio Z. I'm not sure that either would have the time to dedicate to the project during the peak of bridal season, but they might be willing to take on the project in the "off" season. When is your anniversary?

My anniversary was last week, so I'm not really in a hurry to get this done - I am sure no popular videographer would be too interested in doing this during the busy season.

BTW - who shot your video? You can PM me :)

Matt @ Lifetime shot our wedding video. I love it more than words, and I'm so glad we have it. Smile
