Travel toys for 3ish years old?

Aside from the obvious DVD player, crayons, magna doodle, and puzzles, what small toys does your child love during a long road trip?  I need ideas to go purchase some fresh toys for our upcoming trip.  What keeps your child happy?  Also, favorite movies or DVDs?  We need some new ones.

We are also on the hunt for a soft play tray for the carseat.  If you have one, do you like it?  What do you have?

  • Tag reader with books, Crayola wonder markers and coloring books... I just saw an ad for a Munchkin soft lap tray that looked nice and had a snack trap cup. Haven't seen it in person but I want to check it out!

  • My son loves to have hand held toys in the car (cars, dinosaurs, superhero guys).  Viewmasters and books would work well in the car.  For long trips I think non-movie DVDs are nice...G tends to get bored with a 2 hours movie but a DVD that has several 30 minute shows on it holds his attention better.  We are attempting our first drive to Florida with him in a few months so I will be checking back here for more car ideas!  :)

We checked out TV series on DVD from the library (and renewed from FL) like Curious George, Mickey's clubhouse.  Like PP said it kept his attention more than a movie and DH and I didn't have to listen to Cars 100 times!.  I bought this magnetic puzzle and this piano book from Kohl's just for the trip and they were a big hit.  I also found something like this at TRU which worked out well because he hated the soft travel tray I had bought.  DS also has a pretend steering wheel that he "helps" drive with.  Someone also suggested once a cookie sheet and magnets for in the car that we will definitely try next time.  DS likes cars in the car, so maybe she would like a doll or 2??  And "new" CDs from the library were also a hit.

If you take me with you I promise to sit in the back seat and be the entertainment!  Cool

  • A few things that have worked for us: Fisher-Price Snap N Style doll, lacing cards, a Disney princess book with a little plastic music player attached and plastic CDs. That bought us an hour. Sticker books, a Melissa and Doug book with faces, then sticker eyes, mouths, eyebrows, accessories, etc. Also bought us a lot of time. Color Wonder coloring book with a clipboard and markers, lots of snacks, Leapfrog Scribble and Write (I think that's what it's called). I found lots of little odds and ends at TJ Maxx.

My parents owned two tapes of "Wee Sing Silly Songs" for long car rides growing up.  They're funny songs and we loved them...

I picked up a set of CD's and books at one of those bargain book stores...

Here's a link to my search on amazon:

  • This Snack & Play Travel Tray looks handy.

I wish we had it for the stroller when G was younger.  Stuff was always falling out of the little stroller tray.

  • We have a leaptop my first laptop that she loves and used a ton over the weekend on our car trip. We watched Cars and Wiggles a few times too.
