What did/will you get your 4 year old DS for his bday? Or what is your 4 year old into?

He has everything rideable imaginable for outside.  He has train stuff galore but he barely plays with it anymore.  He has lots of Lego duplos which he barely plays with anymore- maybe he's ready for the little legos? But with an 18 month old I don't want them around.

He loves all things technology.  Do I get him a DS?  He already plays my computer, iphone and leapster explorer.  We also have a wii, which we really don't play.  I don't want him spending anymore time then he already does.

He likes transformers so I will get him one or 2 of those.

It's weird he isn't super into any of his toys right now. He mainly wants to play outside, help me garden, cook or clean or help his dad with projects, play with playdough, but not so much play with toys anymore.

So what do I get him?

Oh and he's already going to a couple camps this summer, and I think we'll be getting season passes to our local amusement park, and we have memberships to our local kids museums and zoo.  So GC's to that type of thing  won't work.

  • DS got his pillow pet, some books and a pair of cowboy boots.

  • We did little legos - and they are only taken out after ds2 goes to bed. It's a special building time with dad while I put ds2 to bed. We also did some dress up clothes and accessories because he is so into imaginary play. A puppet theater would be cool.

If he's not asking for much, I would keep it simple, Go with the transformers, maybe some books.
  • He's 4.  He won't get it, really.  If he doesn't want or need anything, why spend the money on things?  I tend not to get my kids much for their birthdays other than throwing a party for them.  At 4, the twins got a big pool party with friends and family.  This year, I think we're giving Alex a week at golf camp, mostly because I bought tix for Avery and I to go to a Taylor Swift concert and we're going to tell her about it on her birthday and want something to tell him about.

  • Sam loves the real legos and he is great at working with them.  You could do a set that he can only play with while the baby is away from him, maybe?  I have no idea how to handle Sam's "big kid" toys when baby number two one gets to the point of picking stuff up and trying to eat it, so not much help there.

The other huge hit from his birthday is a matchbox track set.  He loves the cars (already had some) and launching them.

  • We got DS Magnatiles and a Jumbo Fun Ball (huge hit!) His favorite gifts from others were a stomp rocket, little Legos, and walkie talkies.

  • My DS got Hot Wheels Trick Trax sets and Hot Wheels Criss Cross Crash for his 4th birthday and really enjoys those.  He also likes super hero puzzles and loves his remote control cars.  Games are good too - Zingo, SuperWhy, CandyLand and Dont Break the Ice are favorites around here.

No he is asking for lots of things. A tennis racket  and balls, a pogo stick, chuggington trains, trains from the zoo...

The problem is that there are few children in our family so everyone wants to know what to get them so I have to think of what he says he wants, and  what he will actually use....

  • The Melissa & Doug grocery store/ lemonade stand has been a big hit. Cash register. Shake & Go Cars. Puppet theatre. New PJs. Sports stuff. Have you seen all the fun educational toys from Lakeshore Learning?
