Babies on the Brain

introducing the bottle = hell.

so we've been introducing a bottle to Brooke for like a week & a half. First we tried the Medela bottle that came w/ my pump - was too fast. We are now using a wide neck Avent bottle w/ slow flow nipple. She eats out of it OK, the flow seems fine.

The past 2 nights she has screamed BLOODY murder after her bottle. She is 100% fine after breastfeeding. It's only after a bottle. She screams so loud & is in so much pain from gas, I am in tears. It's breaking my heart to see her so upset. The only way to get her settled is to rock her in the carseat until she falls asleep.

Any advice? Should I give Dr. Brown's wideneck bottles a try? At this point, I loathe the bottle & wish I never had to even use it :(

Re: introducing the bottle = hell.

  • How often are you burping her? When the kids were that age I was burping after each ounce-ish, but you're right the flow might still be too fast. Have you tried the Nuk bottles? They're supposed to be good for simulating BFing in that the baby uses the same motion to suck as when nursing. The hole in the nipple actually presses against the roof of the mouth, so it's not automatically dripping out and having the baby catch up with the flow.

Is there BM or formula in the bottle?  Why are you giving the bottle?  My answers depend on your answers ;)

  • With Elena, she was so picky in the beginning.  We tried several until we found one she didn't hate.  Once she was used to the idea of the bottle (maybe a week or two later) she didn't mind the shape anymore.  We switched to the ones we liked the best & it was fine.

If she is anything like E, you can probably switch to the Dr. Browns or any other anti-gas/colic bottle without much of a problem.

You might also stick with a super slow flow nipple. It might just be too fast, even if it seems fine.

    BM in the bottle, yes.

I have to go back to work part time in a few weeks so she needs to know the bottle. We are trying one per day to get her used to it. Right now only doing 2.5oz or so & then giving her my breast if she wants more. Half hour after eating she starts screaming w/ gas pain

I do have a Nuk bottle but have not tried yet...

  • OH and I should add that we try to burp her after every ounce or so w/ the bottle - even more if we can because I am trying like hell to not give her any more gas.

Does she take the bottle fine, and get gassy after?  Or is she fighting/crying while taking the bottle?

I know that Dr. Brown's has a premie nipple. If you think the flow is still too fast. Also Playtex Ventair bottles are supposed to be good for gassy babies I have heard.

Have you tried giving the bottle, not a bedtime and seeing what happens?

she takes the bottle fine & gets gassy after. (before she was having problems w/ flow being too fast - but the Avent bottle w/ slow flow nipple seems to help that & now she is OK with it)

We tried giving it a bit earlier tonight, around 6:30pm to see what would happen. Do you think I should try during the early part of the day to see if that makes a difference?
