Finally, Birth Story!

I feel like I have been away from the internet for YEARS. MOAR INTERWEBZ!!1!

Okay, here goes:

Short Version: Claire Noelle was born May 26 at 9:20am, after a fantastically dramatic water break on my husband and couch, followed by a short labour. She weighed in at 7 pounds, 2 oz and has a head of dark hair.

Mega-Long Version:

As stated, my very first labour sign at 40 weeks 6 days was my water breaking on the couch while watching a movie and snuggling with DH, at about 9:30pm on the 25th.  There was A LOT of fluid!

We arrived at the hosp. at 11pm to get checked.  They kept me for an hour to dose GBS drugs, and they gave me a gel to get things started.  I had had no contractions at this point, cervix was thick, and I was a fingertip dilated.

We got home around midnight and I started having contractions fairly close together.  I let DH sleep until about 2:30 whenI decided I wanted to go back in to get something for pain and get checked again.  When we got there I was only at 2-3 cm, so they gave me a shot of demoral (wow!!), kept me for another hour or so and sent us home again. Suffice it to say I was intensely stoned at this point.

Around 6:30am the shot had worn off and I was in a lot of pain so we went back. They gave me a dose of fentinol  (sp?) and I used oxygen.  At this point I was barely four centimeters.  I laboured in the tub until I started feeling the need to push after an hour or so. I got up on the bed and my doc checked me and said there was a lip and not to push.  Ya right!  I tried so hard not to, but seriously, there was noway. He decided to just roll with it and just rammed his hand up there and shoved the lip aside. OUCH!

Claire was sunny side up and the doc spent a lot of time trying to get her to turn while I was pushing, which hurt like the devil, because he kept having to stick his hand up there.  In the end he wasn?table to get her to turn and I ended up with a 2nd degree tear. (My DH witnessed this blessed event and is now completely traumatized, lol.)  I didn?t even feel it because the doc saw it coming andpreemptively froze me with a local anaesthetic.

I couldn?t believe it when they put her on mychest.  It was amazing.  I had no real concept of time during thewhole process but my amazing nurse informed me that I had only been in active labour for 4 hours, and only pushed for 35 minutes, which according to her is a damn miracle for a first timer with a posterior facing baby.

Our hospital experience was incredible.  The nurses and doctors were great and there was a lot of support to get started breastfeeding, whichis crazy harder than I thought.  DH has also been unbelievable through the whole thing and I can already tell she?s going to be a major daddy?s girl! LOVELOVE LOVE.

  • CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!

I have been eagerly awaiting this birth story after I knew your water broke on your couch and YH. AWESOME. I wish you had a picture of the look on DH's face.

Is he more traumatized because of the tearing or his near-drowning experience?

LOL I think in hindsight I was more surprised by the water break than he was. The tear did a number on the poor guy.  He said that it was all he could see when he closes his eyes.  I feel bad for him!
