How do you put baby to bed?

DS is 10 days old, and so far we've just started getting him to sleep longer stretches (2-4 hours at night).  We feed him and then rock him to sleep (the rocking part taking about 45 minutes) then put him down in the bassinett with the sleep sheep.  I'm wondering how it would go if we tried just feeding him, having quick cuddle time, and putting him down.

So, my question is: how many of you put your baby down after a night feed or for bed with the baby awake?  Or do you make sure they're asleep first?

  • My first was pretty old when we started to put her in bed awake. Probably around 15-18 months old. It's just what worked for us.

Avery is a much better sleeper. Usually she drifts off to sleep about a half hour after eating at night and will sleep for about 3 hours before she wakes for her next feeding. She sleeps in the rock and play most of the night, and after she gets up for her first feeding I'll move her to the pnp in our room.

  • We've developed a better stride now, but at first it was any way he would go to bed. Now it's nurse for as long as he wants, and then he falls into his "milk coma" after about 2-5 minutes. Then I s-l-o-w-l-y transfer him to the bassinet and PRAY he doesn't fuss. If he does, now we've begun offering a pacifier (just when I know he's full and wants to suckle for comfort) that usually does the trick until he relaxes and falls asleep again.

When he's going through a growth spurt and needs to nurse for longer, he'll keep spitting out the paci and crying, and I always give him as much time as he wants on the boob.

  • Georgia usually falls asleep during her middle of the night feedings.  I put her into the basinette and if she fusses a bit, I give her a paci and she falls back to sleep and spits the paci out.

I used to do pretty much what ever K wanted.

This week I have new rules: We only swaddle at night and we only use the Rock N Play at night.

So now for her bed time feeding (between 8-11) we put PJ's on, feed her, cuddle, and then lay her down. (we've been pulling the rockNplay  into the living room so she is near us, then we move it to our bedroom when we go to bed)
For the last 2 nights shes gone to sleep on her own, but  tonight she fussed so much, even after her paci, that I picked her up and cuddled her to sleep.

  • Unfortunately this won't help much, but our DD falls asleep while she is eating. The second she finishes her bottle she is out like a light. (which is why it is so hard to get the last burp in--she is passed out) We just put her down and turn the Soothing Seahorse on and she is out for the next few hours.

Since she has arrived, I don't think she has been able to stay awake after any feeding at all.

Probably after 10 of his 12 or so feedings a day he falls asleep on the breast and stays sleeping once I place him in the crib. The other two times, he either doesn't fall asleep or wakes up  when he hits the mattress and he just lays there quietly until he falls asleep or we just pick him up because we feel like holding him (He is 8 days old so about the same age).
  • We feed her until she doesn't take the breast anymore before laying her down. She usually falls asleep on the breast, though. I'll hold her a couple more minutes to make sure she is actually asleep and then put her in her crib. If she gets fussy, I swaddle her and offer her a paci- That usually does it for us. If she's still hungry she'll spit the paci out, kick out of her swaddle, and keep fussing.

  • Between 8-9 we give Elsie a bath (soap every other night only). She gets lotion and a massage from DH. I nurse her to sleep and put her in the RnP. She sleeps for 4-5 hours.

If we were to put her down awake she would flip out.

  • I'd say 90% of the time I put Baby Boy down awake/drowsy. I rocked Big Girl till she was asleep for along time (as an infant) and do not have the time, nor do I want to do that this time around.

  • We do the last feeding of the night usually around 9 or 10.  I'd say DS is awake at least 90% of the time when we lay him down.  He's taken to sleeping on his side, and doesn't like to be placed on his back any more.  He'll just roll onto his side.  Give him the paci, he calms down pretty quickly, and usually sleeps for about 4 hours.  After the first stretch, he sleeps in 2 and a half to 3 hours increments for the rest of the night.

  • We feed Owen, burp him, and let him sleep on our shoulder for about 30 minutes before we put him in the crib. If he is really fussy, we'll move him to the bouncer in our room. He refuses to sleep in the PnP we had in our room, so we've moved that downstairs for during the day.

  • Eight days in, I have only gotten her to sleep in her bassinet one time for about an hour.  If we put her down asleep, she wakes up after a couple minutes and cries until she's picked up.  During the day, she will sometimes sleep on a contour pillow or in a vibrating lounger, but not for very long.  The only way she sleeps for any length of time is when she's being held.
